Mount Zion Cemetery (Walnut Ridge, Arkansas)
Mount Zion Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, located north of the junction of Fulbright Avenue and Mills Street near the entrance to Williams Baptist University. The earliest confirmed burial dates to 1875, and approximately 360 burials are known to have occurred in the cemetery since then, with most taking place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A church and school were once located adjacent to the cemetery, but both are no longer extant. The Walnut Ridge Army Airfield was constructed near the cemetery during World War II. After a cycle of neglect and restoration in the 1970s and 1980s, the cemetery was thereafter maintained by the municipality of College City until College City's 2017 consolidation with Walnut Ridge. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. Williams Baptist University
Williams Baptist University is a private Baptist university in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Founded in 1941, this institution began as a two-year school. It began granting bachelor's degrees in 1984 and master's degrees in 2017. The name of the school was changed in 1991 from Southern Baptist College to Williams Baptist College in honor of its founder and first president, H. E. Williams. In 2018, its name was changed to Williams Baptist University. Williams has been accredited since 1963 by the Higher Learning Commission. The university is owned and operated by the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, which is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. LGBT prohibition WBU has been granted a partial exemption to Title IX that allows it to discriminate against LGBT students for religious reasons. Walnut Ridge, Arkansas
Walnut Ridge is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,098 at the United States Census's 2019 estimate. Walnut Ridge lies immediately north of Hoxie. The two towns form a contiguous urban area with approximately 8,000 residents. Williams Baptist University is in College City, a formerly separate community that merged into Walnut Ridge in 2017. History Walnut Ridge was formally established in 1875 as a result of the railroad coming through the area. There was settlement in the area known as Old Walnut Ridge not far from the current city since about 1860.
