Mount Markham
Mount Markham () is a twin-peaked massif surmounting the north end of the Markham Plateau in the Queen Elizabeth Range of Antarctica. The peaks have elevations of and . Exploration and name Mount Markham was discovered by the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–1904). It is named for Sir Clements Markham, who, as President of the Royal Geographical Society, planned the expedition and chose Robert Falcon Scott as its leader. Location Mount Markham is in the northern part of the Queen Elizabeth Range. It is south of Mount Cara, east of the Frigate Range and the head of the Kent Glacier, and northeast of the Markham Plateau. Ultra Prominent Peak
An ultra-prominent peak, or ultra for short, is a mountain summit with a topographic prominence of or more; it is also called a P1500. The prominence of a peak is the minimum height of climb to the summit on any route from a higher peak, or from sea level if there is no higher peak. There are approximately 1,500 such peaks on Earth. Some well-known peaks, such as the Matterhorn and Eiger, are not ultras because they are connected to higher mountains by high cols and thus do not achieve enough topographic prominence. The term "ultra" originated with earth scientist Steve Fry, from his studies of the prominence of peaks in Washington (state), Washington in the 1980s. Kent Glacier
Lowery Glacier () is a glacier about long, a tributary of the Nimrod Glacier, which enters the west of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Location The Lowery Glacier flows north from Prince Andrew Plateau, Antarctica, along the east side of the Queen Elizabeth Range to enter Nimrod Glacier. To the north of Softbed Ridges it converges with Robb Glacier, but the two glaciers separate when they reach Taylor Hills. It was named by the New Zealand Geological and Topographical Survey Expedition (1959–60) for J.H. McMurdo Sound
The McMurdo Sound is a sound in Antarctica, known as the southernmost passable body of water in the world, located approximately from the South Pole. Captain James Clark Ross discovered the sound in February 1841 and named it after Lieutenant Archibald McMurdo of HMS ''Terror''. The sound serves as a resupply route for cargo ships and airplanes that land on floating ice airstrips near McMurdo Station. The McMurdo seasonal Ice Runway was operated from October to December from the 1950s to the 2010s, then in December the ice breaks up and McMurdo port is opened by an Icebreaker ship and ships can resupply the Antarctic bases. Byrd Station
The Byrd Station is a former research station established by the United States during the International Geophysical Year by U.S. Navy Seabees during Operation Deep Freeze II in West Antarctica. It was a year-round base until 1972, and then seasonal up to 2005. The station was built in 1957, and is located on the West Antarctic ice cap. It was accessible by overland ice traverse or by ski-equipped C-130 aircraft. History A joint Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines operation supported an overland tractor train traverse that left out of Little America V in late 1956 to establish the station. The train was led by Army Major Merle Dawson and completed a traverse of over unexplored country in Marie Byrd Land to blaze a trail to a spot selected beforehand. British Antarctic Expedition, 1907–09
The ''Nimrod'' Expedition of 1907–1909, otherwise known as the British Antarctic Expedition, was the first of three expeditions to the Antarctic led by Ernest Shackleton and his second time to the Continent. Its main target, among a range of geographical and scientific objectives, was to be first to reach the South Pole. This was not attained, but the expedition's southern march reached a Farthest South latitude of 88° 23' S, just from the pole. This was by far the longest southern polar journey to that date and a record convergence on either Pole. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980. Frigate Range
The Frigate Range () is a high mountain range extending east from Mount Markham in the Queen Elizabeth Range of Antarctica. Name The Frigate Range was named by the northern party of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE; 1961–62) to commemorate the work of the New Zealand frigates on Antarctic patrol duties. Location The Frigate Range is a ridge in the east of the Queen Elizabeth Range, bounded by the Lowery Glacier to the east, the Kent Glacier to the south and the Rowland Glacier to the north. The Queen Elizabeth Range () is a rugged mountain range that parallels the eastern side of Marsh Glacier for nearly from Nimrod Glacier in the north to Law Glacier in the south.
