Mount Airy is a city in Surry County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 10,676. As of 2020, the city is the most populous municipality in Surry County. Mount Airy is located within the Piedmont Triad metropolitan region. History The region currently known as Mount Airy, North Carolina, was originally settled in the 1750s by predominantly English, Scotch-Irish, and German settlers. The native Cheraw people were known to inhabit the area prior to the arrival of these European settlers. As westward expansion progressed following the French and Indian War, Mount Airy started to develop, serving as a stagecoach stop on the road connecting Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Galax, Virginia. The city derived its name from a plantation in the vicinity. Trinity Episcopal Church (Mount Airy, North Carolina)
Trinity Episcopal Church is a historic Episcopal church located in Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. It was built in 1896, and is a one-story, Gothic Revival-style masonry structure of uncoarsed granite rubble, locally sourced and donated by parishioner Thomas Woodruff, president of the North Carolina Granite Corporation at that time. The first service in the new building was held in July of 1896. Trinity was consecrated on October 13, 1900, and was dedicated to "…the Worship and Service of Almighty God, the administration of His Holy Sacraments, the Reading and Preaching of His Holy Word, and for the performance of All Holy Offices" by the Bishop of North Carolina, the Rt. Renfro Mill
Renfro Mill, also known as R. Roberts Leaf Tobacco House, is a historic industrial building located at Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. The original section was built as a tobacco barn about 1893. The largest addition was built in 1946–1947. It is a one- to 4 1/2-story, brick, concrete, steel, wood, and granite industrial building encompassing 100,000 square feet of space. It was originally built to house a tobacco leaf house, and after 1921 the Renfro company, a sock manufacturer. The mill closed in 1997. North Carolina Granite Corporation Quarry Complex is a historic granite quarry and national historic district located at Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 22 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 8 contributing structures in an area approximately one mile long and 1/3 mile wide. Notable contributing resources include the cutting shed (1927), the office building (1928), and a building originally used as a blacksmith shop. It is the world's largest open faced granite quarry. William Alfred Moore House
The William Alfred Moore House is a historic home located at Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. It was built between 1861 and 1863, and is the earliest known structure still standing in Mount Airy. The house is known for its Italianate and Gothic Revival exterior details and Greek Revival interior.
