Mouflon
The mouflon (''Ovis gmelini'') is a wild sheep native to Cyprus, and the Caspian region, including eastern Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Iran. It is also found in parts of Europe. It is thought to be the ancestor of all modern domestic sheep breeds. Taxonomy ''Ovis gmelini'' was the scientific name proposed by Edward Blyth in 1841 for wild sheep in the Middle East. European Mouflon
The European mouflon is a feral subspecies of the primitive Sheep, domestic sheep. It is found in Europe and western Asia. It is originally from western Asia. Description Male mouflon are known as rams and the females as ewes. The young animals are known as lambs. Appearance European mouflon have a body length of up to 120 cm, a shoulder height of 90 cm, a weight of 25 to 40 kg for ewes, 35 to 55 kg for the ram. The European mouflon has a smooth hairy coat, the rams are fox red-brown in the summer, usually with a whitish saddle patch, the ewes are brownish. Both sexes are darker in winter. Armenian Mouflon
The Armenian mouflon (''Ovis orientalis gmelini'') is an endangered subspecies of mouflon endemic to Iran, Armenia, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iraq. Taxonomy The Armenian mouflon was first described in 1840 by Edward Blyth, who equated it with the "Orientalische Schaaf" (Oriental sheep) described by Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin in 1774. It is known as the Armenian mouflon in both , ''haykakan muflon'' and , ''Qutch-e armani''. Cyprus Mouflon
The Cyprus mouflon (''Ovis orientalis ophion''), also known as Cypriot mouflon, is an endangered subspecies of mouflon endemic only to Cyprus in the mountains of Paphos District. It is the largest animal on the island, a meter tall (at the shoulder), and due to its uniqueness and rarity it is the national animal of Cyprus. History It is believed to be the wild descendant of sheep brought introduced in the island from Asia by the Eteocypriots people during the Neolithic period. Roman archeology discovered from Cyprus have shown depictions of the mouflon on mosaics and frescoes. It was nearly driven to extinction during the 20th century.
