The classification system of inhabited localities in Russia and some other post-Soviet states has certain peculiarities compared with those in other countries. Classes During the Soviet time, each of the republics of the Soviet Union, including the Russian SFSR, had its own legislative documents dealing with classification of inhabited localities. Sormovsky City District
Sormovsky City District (), or Sormovo (), is one of the eight districts of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. It occupies the northwestern corner of the city, adjacent to the Volga River. Population: History The village originally known as Soromovo () had existed since 1542. In 1849, the Sormovo Works—soon one of Russia's most important machine-building plants, later known as Krasnoye Sormovo—was founded; its owner had the village renamed to more euphonic ''Sormovo''. Although legally a village, it soon grew into a large workers' settlement; in 1922, Sormovo became a city; in 1929, it was amalgamated into the city of Nizhny Novgorod, becoming one of its districts. It is one of the city's industrial districts. Sormovo Airfield
Sormovo (or Gorkiy Sormovo) is an airfield in Russia, located on the outskirts of Nizhny Novgorod, some from the center city, just west of the Sokol Aircraft Plant. Legally, it is within the city's Moskovsky District ( Московский район), but it is commonly referred to by the name of the much better-known neighborhood of Sormovo, which is to the north of the airfield. Moreover, between 1956 and 1970 the airfield (and all of today's Moskovsky District) was in fact part of the Sormovsky District. According to the Western sources, it is a military base with MiG-25 and MiG-31 aircraft. The runway dimensions suggest that this airfield was built in the 1950s as a bomber base.
