The Monroe Furnace is a national historic district and historic iron furnace that are located in Barree Township in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. History and architectural features This district consists of one contributing site and one contributing structure. They are the remains of the furnace stack, its immediate surroundings, and the visible foundation remains of fourteen workers' houses. The furnace stack measures at the base and stands tall. Ohio State Route 140
State Route 140 (SR 140) is an east–west state highway in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The highway has its western terminus in Portsmouth at a diamond interchange with U.S. Route 52. Its eastern terminus is at State Route 93 approximately south of Oak Hill. State Route 140 first appeared in the mid-1920s. The two-lane highway passes through three counties along its path: Scioto, Lawrence and Jackson. It begins at an interchange with U.S. Route 52 and, immediately following the interchange, leaves the Portsmouth corporation limits and heads east. The route makes a quick hilly climb upward and downward to the former Teays River Valley near Slocum; it then traverses primarily wooded areas as it passes through Ashley Corner, Scioto Furnace, South Webster, and Eifort. Oak Hill is a village in Jackson County, Ohio, United States, located approximately a 35 mile drive north of Ashland, KY and 42 mile drive southeast of Chillicothe, Ohio. The population was 1,407 at the 2020 census. History The Village of Oak Hill was officially formed on January 12, 1873 from portions of Jefferson and Madison Townships. Many immigrants from Cardiganshire, Wales had previously settled in the area, with the first arriving in the Gallia/ Jackson County area in 1818 and many more in the late 1830's and 1840's- an era referred to as "The Great Welsh Tide." Several Welsh churches were constructed in the Oak Hill Area in the 19th Century, with some of them conducting services in the Welsh Language in to the 1920's.
