Mona Annette Williams (born 27 July 1943) is a Guyanese–New Zealand children's author, memoirist, Oral storytelling, oral storyteller and educator. Born in British Guiana, Williams has lived and worked in New Zealand since 1971, and performed in storytelling festivals around the world. Her performances incorporate music and dance. She has written over 24 stories for children, usually published in the ''New Zealand School Journal'', and published an autobiography in 1995 about her experiences attending a colonial school in Guyana. Early life and education Mona Williams was born in the township of Mackenzie in the colony of British Guiana in what is now Linden, Guyana, Linden, Guyana, on 27 July 1943. She is Jewish and of African descent; her family surname Williams derives from the slave owners of her ancestors. She attended Bishops' High School, Guyana, Bishops' High School on a scholarship. MacKenzie, Guyana
Linden is the second largest city in Guyana after Georgetown, and capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region, located at , altitude . It was declared a town in 1970, and includes the communities of MacKenzie, Christianburg, and Wismar. It lies on the Demerara River and has a population of 27,277 as of 2012. It is primarily a bauxite mining town, containing many mines 60–90 m deep, with many other pits now in disuse. The Bauxite Company Commercial bauxite mining started in Linden a hundred years ago. In 1916 the Demerara Bauxite Company Limited, known as DEMBA, a subsidiary of the Aluminum Company of Canada Limited, was established with the objective of mining, processing and selling bauxite. The site chosen for this preliminary venture was on the Demerara River, south of the capital city Georgetown.
