A ( , Ashkenazi Hebrew, Ashkenazi pronunciation , plural: , , "circumciser") is a Jewish man trained in the practice of , the "covenant of male circumcision". A woman who is trained in the practice is referred to as a ''mohelet'' (plural: ''mohelot''). Mohel Book
The Jews, Jewish circumcision ceremony, Brit milah, brit mila, is enacted by a trained specialist called a mohel. Typically, mohels record the circumcisions they have performed in small mohel books, which have become especially important in the field of Genealogy, genealogical research. Use and format The first pages of a mohel book are typically dedicated to the special prayers recited during brit mila. The remaining pages are used to record the details of circumcisions, usually the place, date and name of the boy who was circumcised. Mohels often chose smaller books for this purpose, so they could easily be carried around. Often, they decorated the books and title pages to look like medieval manuscripts. Deborah Cohen (mohelet)
Dr. Deborah Cohen is the first woman to be certified as a mohelet (female circumciser) by the Reform Jewish movement. Career Cohen was an obstetrician at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Los Angeles. A family doctor, Cohen had first turned to the Conservative and Orthodox movements to be trained as a mohelet, but was denied. In early fall of 1981, Cohen contacted the Hebrew Union College to ask for training, but the Reform movement had not yet trained any women to be mohalot. The Reform movement recognized that women could act as mohalot in 1984. The Union of American Hebrew Congregations (now the Union for Reform Judaism), created the Brit Milah Board as the first circumcision training program offered by a liberal Jewish organization. Friar Tuck is one of the Merry Men, the band of heroic outlaws in the folklore of Robin Hood. History The figure of the jovial friar was common in the May Games festivals of England and Scotland during the 15th to 17th centuries.
