''Modern Problems'' is a 1981 American science fiction black comedy film written and directed by Ken Shapiro and starring Chevy Chase, Patti D'Arbanville, and Dabney Coleman. The film grossed $26.2million on an $8million budget (about $million on a $million budget, in today's currency) in the United States. Plot Max Fiedler (Chevy Chase) is an air traffic controller at New York's Kennedy International Airport whose life is slowly going down the drain. His girlfriend, Darcy, has just left him because of his jealousy and negativity. Now, everywhere he goes he seems to run into her with Barry, her narcissistic friend who wants her to be his girlfriend, which drives Max crazy. One night while driving home from a party that turned out to be held at a gay nightclub in Lower Manhattan, a tanker truck spills nuclear waste onto Max's car. Ken Shapiro
Kenneth Roy Shapiro (June 5, 1942 – November 18, 2017) was an American writer, producer, director and child actor. Most notably, he played the role of the "Kid" on '' The Buick-Berle Show.'' He was a regular on George Scheck's "Star Time" Kids Show (1951–52) working under the name "Kenny Sharpe, along with another budding star Connie Francis." Shapiro also directed several titles, including '' The Groove Tube'' (1974) and '' Modern Problems'' (1981). He died in November 2017 at the age of 75 from cancer.Ken Shapiro legacy.com.
