Mithymna () (, also sometimes spelled ''Methymna'') is a town and former municipality on the island of Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece. Since the 2019 local government reform it is part of the municipality of West Lesbos, of which it is a municipal unit. Before 1919, its official name was Μόλυβος - Molyvos; that name dates back to the end of the Byzantine Era, but is still in common use today. Geography It is located NE of Eressos, N of Plomari and NW of Mytilene. The town (pop. 1,399 at 2011 census) is on the northern part of the island, just some 6 km north of the popular beach town of Petra. One of the most noticeable features of the town is the old Genoese fortress on the hill in the middle of the town. The town's agora is located on the uphill road to the fortress and is popular among tourists, with many historic shops, cafés and restaurants. West Lesbos (), sometimes also referred to as West Lesvos, is a municipality on the island of Lesbos in the North Aegean region in Greece. The municipality was formed from a decision by the Ministry of the Interior, published on 9 March 2019, which divided the pre-existing municipality of Lesbos. The seat of the municipality is in Kalloni. The municipality encompasses 36 towns and villages in a total area of 1,072 square kilometers. Petra (Greek: , meaning 'rock') is a former municipality on the island of Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece. Since the 2019 local government reform, it is a municipal unit of the municipality of West Lesbos. Petra is in northwestern Lesbos and comprises the villages Petra, Skoutaros, Stypsi, Lafionas, and Ypsilometopo, and the settlements Petri and Anaxos. Mytilene
Mytilene (; ) is the capital city, capital of the Greece, Greek island of Lesbos, and its port. It is also the capital and administrative center of the North Aegean Region, and hosts the headquarters of the University of the Aegean. It was founded in the 11th century BC. North Aegean
The North Aegean Region (, ) is one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece, and the smallest of the thirteen by population. It comprises the islands of the north-eastern Aegean Sea, called the North Aegean islands, except for Thasos and Samothrace, which belong to the Greek region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, and Imbros and Tenedos, which belong to Turkey. Pisidice Of Methymna
In Greek mythology, Pisidice ( ; ) is a native of Methymna, an ancient Greek city state in the north of the island of Lesbos in the northeastern Aegean Sea. Pisidice is notable for her love for the hero Achilles who waged war against her homeland. Pisidice's infatuation with him was so great that she willingly betrayed her home city for his sake on the promise Achilles would marry her, but after conquering Methymna the hero put her to death for treason. Her story has many shared elements with other heroines who betrayed their besieged fatherlands after falling in love with the enemy, only for their supposed lovers to punish them accordingly for treachery, while at the same time reaping the benefits of the women's treason. It also seems to be part of an old but obscure tradition of Achilles raiding and capturing the cities of the northeastern Aegean. In Roman mythology, Moneta (Latin Monēta) was a title given to two separate goddesses: It was the name of the goddess of memory (identified with the Greek goddess Mnemosyne), and it was an epithet of Juno, called Juno Moneta (Latin Iūno Monēta). The latter's name is the source of numerous words in English and the Romance languages, including “money" and "mint". The cult of the goddess Moneta was established largely under the influence of Greek religion, which featured the cult of Mnemosyne ("Μνημοσύνη"), the goddess of memory and the mother of the Muses. The goddess's name is derived from Latin ''monēre'' (which means to remind, warn, or instruct).
