Misión Nuestra Señora De Guadalupe De Huasinapi
Mission Guadalupe was established by the Jesuit Everardo Helen in 1720, at the Cochimà settlement of Huasinapà in the Sierra de la Giganta about 40 kilometers west of Mulegé, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The mission was named after Our Lady of Guadalupe. History The mission went through a typical trajectory of demographic decline experienced by the Baja California missions, as the neophyte population dwindled under the impact of Old World diseases. The mission was abandoned in the Dominican period, in 1795, when its residents were transferred to La PurÃsima. Surviving traces of Mission Guadalupe include building walls, dams, and graveyards. CochimÃ
The Cochimà were the Indigenous inhabitants of the central part of the Baja California peninsula, from El Rosario in the north to San Javier in the south. Information on Cochimà customs and beliefs has been preserved in the brief observations by explorers but, above all, in the writings of the Jesuits (Aschmann 1959; Laylander 2000; Mathes 2006). Particularly important and detailed are the works of Miguel Venegas (1757, 1979) and Miguel del Barco (1973). The Sierra de la Giganta is a mountain range of eastern Baja California Sur state, located on the southern Baja California Peninsula in northwestern Mexico. It is a mountain range of the Peninsular Ranges System, which extends from Southern California, through the Baja California Peninsula in Baja California and Baja California Sur states. Mulegé
Mulegé is a city in Mulegé Municipality, Baja California Sur, situated on the Gulf of California. Located on the Gulf of California, the population was 3,834 according to the Mexican census of 2020. History Indigenous peoples have lived in this area for thousands of years due to the abundance of water in the river valley. Extensive ancient cave paintings can be found in the nearby Sierra de Guadalupe mountains. In 1702, Jesuit Father Juan Maria de Salvatierra identified the valley of today's Mulegé as a place for a mission to the Indians. It was not until 1754 that Father Francisco Escalante started the construction of the mission, called Misión Santa RosalÃa de Mulegé. Our Lady of Guadalupe (), also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe (), is a Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with four Marian apparitions to Juan Diego and one to his uncle, Juan Bernardino reported in December 1531, when the Mexican territories were part of the Spanish Empire. Misión La PurÃsima Concepción De Cadegomó
Mission La PurÃsima, was founded west of Loreto in Baja California Sur, by the Jesuit missionary Nicolás Tamaral in 1720 and financed by the Marqués de Villapuente de la Peña and his wife the Marquesa de las Torres de Rada. By 1735 it had been moved to a new location at the Cochimà rancherÃa known as Cadegomó, meaning "arroyo of the carrizos", about 30 kilometers south of the original site. The mission was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The mission was abandoned in 1822.
