Miroslav Šmíd (speedway Rider)
Miroslav Šmíd is a Czech former international speedway rider. Speedway career Šmíd won a silver medal at the Speedway World Team Cup in the 1963 Speedway World Team Cup. Like many Czech riders of the time, the Czechoslovak authorities rarely allowed riders to compete for British league teams but they did allow club sides such as Prague to tour the United Kingdom, which allowed Šmíd to race in Britain in 1968, where he starred alongside Antonín Kasper Sr. and Antonín Šváb Sr. and drew attention as the rider to watch out for on the tour following a strong World Championship qualifying campaign. Prague Speedway
Prague Speedway has consisted of several former motorcycle speedway teams and stadia and the current team known as AK Markéta Praha, who race at the Markéta Stadium. History 1928 to 1992 The origins of speedway in Prague can be traced back to races held at the Stadion Letná, starting on 9 June 1928 and these were soon followed by meetings at the Great Strahov Stadium on 14 May 1933 and the Žižkov TJ Sokol Stadium on 11 April 1934. Following the end of World War II, the Czechoslovak military began forming sports teams and regional and national competitions. In 1953, a law (following the Soviet model) determined that all clubs should be voluntary sports societies, with athletes being allocated to clubs according to their civic occupations. Speedway World Team Cup
The Speedway World Team Cup was an annual motorcycle speedway, speedway event held each year in different countries. The competition started in 1960 and was replaced with the Speedway World Cup in 2001. Format From 1960 until 1985, each team consisted of four riders and a reserve. A final meeting was held after qualifying rounds, the winner being decided on total points scored in that final meeting. In 1986, the teams that qualified for the 'final' raced three meetings, the winner of each meeting being awarded three points, second place awarded two points, and third place awarded a point. The total points gained over the three meetings determined the champion. In 1987, the three meeting system was used again, but this time the aggregate points scored by the individual riders were added together to determine the champion. 1988 saw the championship revert to the original format. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . 1963 Speedway World Team Cup was the fourth edition of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. Stanislav Kubíček (born 23 May 1940) is a Czech former speedway rider. Speedway career Kubíček reached the final of the Speedway World Team Cup in the 1963 Speedway World Team Cup. He has also reached the final of the Individual Speedway Long Track World Championship on two occasions in 1974 and 1976.
