Mir (Calixto García)
Mir is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' (ward) of the municipality of Calixto García, in Holguín Province. In 2011 it had a population of 6,647. History The village was founded on December 6, 1902, following the construction of the central railway (''Ferrocarril Central'') Havana-Santiago, that crosses it in the middle. Previously, it was a rural locality named ''Aguada Ciego de la Rioja''. Geography Mir spans on a plain next to some scattered hills and close to the border with Las Tunas Province. It lies between the cities of Holguín (47 km east), Las Tunas (51 km west) and Bayamo (53 km south); and is 15 km from the town of Buenaventura, the municipal seat of Calixto García. It is 8 km from Sabanazo, 13 from Omaja, 16 from Maceo, 42 from Cacocum and 43 from Holguín-Frank País Airport. Bayamo
Bayamo is the capital city of the Granma Province of Cuba and one of the largest cities in the Oriente region. Overview The community of Bayamo lies on a plain by the Bayamo River. It is affected by the violent Bayamo wind. One of the most important education institutions in the province is the University of Granma. Frank País Airport () is an airport serving Holguín, a city in the Cuban province of Holguín. It bears the name of Cuban revolutionary Frank País. The airport was built in 1962 initially only for military purposes before civilian air operations began in 1966. It consists of a domestic and an international terminal, which was built in 1996 and expanded in 2007. History The aviation history of Holguín originates in a makeshift runway built near the Hill of the Cross () in the city. Cacocum
Cacocum is a municipality and town in the Holguín Province of Cuba. Overview It is located south of the city of Holguín and east of the Frank País International Airport towards the city of Bayamo on the Carretera Central Highway. The area includes extremely flat ground stretching south to the municipality's boundaries with Granma Province. Its territory is bounded on the west by Las Tunas Province, and on the east with the Báguanos municipality, its nearest neighbor. Carretera Central and the Central Railroad pass near the Cacocum townsite, the most populated settlement of this municipality. Omaja
Omaja is a small town and ''consejo popular'' of the municipality of Majibacoa, Cuba. It is located in the eastern part of the province, 50 kilometers southwest of Holguín and 20 in the east of Las Tunas (city), Las Tunas. History The land in the area was sold for a trifle by Lico López to American D. E. Kerr and his neocolonizing retinue. The town of Omaja was settled by American Methodists. In the year 1905, the Americans who had settled there, without wasting any time, began the construction of a town with the architecture of the American west. The streets were named after the men who bought them: Kreider, Frankbert, Blasser, etc. Unlike the majority of other towns in Cuba, Omaja has no Roman Catholic church or establishment, due to it remaining a small, Methodist town since its founding. Las Tunas is a city and municipality in central-eastern Cuba. It is the capital of the Las Tunas Province and was named Victoria de Las Tunas from 1869 to 1976.
