Minnow
Minnow is the common name for a number of species of small freshwater fish, belonging to several genus, genera of the family Cyprinidae and in particular the subfamily Leuciscinae. They are also known in Ireland as wikt:pinkeen, pinkeens. While the common name can refer to a range of taxa, smaller fish in the subfamily Leuciscinae, Leusciscinae are considered by Angling, anglers to be "true" minnows. Types of minnows Bluntnose minnow (''Pimephales notatus''): The bluntnose minnow is a primary bait fish for Northern America, and has a very high tolerance for variable water qualities, which helps its distribution throughout many regions. The snout of the bluntnose minnow overhangs the mouth, giving it the bluntnose. There is a dark lateral line which stretches from the opercle to the base of the tail, where a large black spot is located. The average size of the adult is approximately . Common shiner (''Notropis cornutus)'': These fish are one of the most common type of bait fish ...

The natural geographic range extends throughout much of North America, from central Canada south along the Rocky Mountains, Rockies to Texas, and east to Virginia and the Northeastern United States.Page, Lawrence M. and Brooks M. Burr (1991), ''Freshwater Fishes'', p. 129–130, Houghton Mifflin, New York, NY. This minnow has also been introduced to many other areas via bait bucket releases. This fish is also known for producing Schreckstoff (a distress signal). Silverjaw Minnow
Silverjaw minnows (''Ericymba buccata'') is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae, the shiners, daces and minnows. With over 300 known species, there are more species of minnows native to North America's fresh waters than any other fish. Minnows can be hard to distinguish because many look alike.McClane, A.J. 1965. ''McClane's Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes of North America''. New York: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. All minnows have one dorsal fin, ventral fins near the anus, a lateral line system (in most species), and smooth, round cycloid scales.Page, L.M. and Burr, B.M. 2011. ''Peterson Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes of North America North of Mexico''. Boston, New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Their jaws lack teeth, but they have one to three rows of pharyngeal teeth to grind food. Defining physical characteristics such as the number and type of fin rays, type of scales, and pattern of pharyngeal teeth are used to distinguish mi ...

Ptychocheilus
''Ptychocheilus'', the pikeminnows or squawfish, is a genus of freshwater ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Leuciscidae, which includes the daces, chubs, Eurasian minnows and related species. These fishes are native to western North America. Voracious predators, they are considered an "undesirable" species in many waters, largely due to the species' perceived tendency to prey upon small trout and salmon. First known in western science by the common name Columbia River dace, the four species all became lumped under the name "squawfish". In 1999, the American Fisheries Society adopted "pikeminnow" as the name it recommends, because Native Americans consider "squawfish" offensive. The Colorado pikeminnow, ''P. lucius'', is the largest member of the genus, ranging from 4–9 lb (2–4 kg) in adult fish with occasional specimens up to 25 lb (11 kg). Historical and anecdotal reports of Colorado pikeminnows nearing 6 feet (1.8 m) in length and ...
