Miles Walker
Sir Miles Rawstron Walker (born 13 November 1940) is a Manx businessman and politician, who was the first ever Chief Minister of the Isle of Man. Early life and career Born on 13 November 1940 to George Denis Walker and Alice (née Whittaker), he was educated at Castle Rushen High School and the Shropshire Agricultural College. He later went on to become a company director in the farming and retail dairy trade. He was an Arbory commissioner (a local government role) from 1970 until 1976, latterly as the chairman. In 1976 he was elected as an MHK for Rushen. He remained an MHK until he retired at the 2001 General Election. In 1986 he was elected as the island's first ever Chief Minister, and continued in the post until the 1996 election. He was honoured as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1991. The title of Knight Bachelor is the basic rank granted to a man who has been knighted by the monarch but not inducted as a member of one of the organised Order of chivalry, orders of chivalry; it is a part of the Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom, British honours system. Bernard May MHK (born 6 July 1941) is a British politician and entrepreneur, who was a Member of the House of Keys in the Isle of Man and Government Minister. Early life and career Born on 6 July 1941 to Harry Turner May and Lilian Freda (née Nicholl) in Hyde, Cheshire, he was raised on the Isle of Man and educated at Douglas High School. He later went on to own and operate a taxi company on the island and was also a member of Douglas Town Council before he was elected as a Member of the House of Keys for Douglas North in 1985 for the Manx Labour Party. He was re-elected in 1986 and 1991 before losing to John Houghton in 1996, following which he became a bus driver. In 1998, he unsuccessfully stood again. James Anthony Brown OBE (born 5 January 1950) is a Manx politician and businessman who was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man from 2006 until October 2011, when he stepped down from office following his decision to retire. Early life and career Born on 5 January 1950, Brown was educated at Victoria Road Primary, Castletown and Castle Rushen High School and has since been an electrician, being the proprietor of Tony Brown Electrics in Castletown until its closure in 2010. He was elected as a member of Castletown Commissioners in 1976, becoming chairman in 1980 before being elected as the Castletown MHK in 1981 at his first attempt. In 2000, he was defeated in his attempt to become Speaker of the House of Keys by David Cannan but instead became the Deputy Speaker. The Department of Health and Social Security () or DHSS provided healthcare (hospitals, doctors, dentistry, ambulance service), social services (mental health, social workers, and residential care), and social security (state pensions, child benefit, sickness benefit, and Jobseeker's Allowance). Prior to the separation of its component parts on 1 April 2010, the DHSS was the largest employer on the Isle of Man, with over 3,000 members of staff. Richard Corkill
Richard Kenneth Corkill (born 1951) was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man from December 2001 until December 2004, and was an elected member of the House of Keys from 1991 to 2006. He was born in Douglas. He was elected by Tynwald with 21 votes, defeating Edgar Quine, who received 10 votes. Arnold Callin
Alured Arnold Callin (25 August 1924 – 29 June 2015) was a Manx politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. He was born in August 1924 and educated at Peel Clothworkers' School. He served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and then became a businessman and auctioneer on the Isle of Man. Between 1956 and 1976 he served on Onchan Commissioners, twice being chairman. In 1976 he was elected MHK for Middle. Edmund Lowey
Edmund Lowey MLC (born 12 February 1938) was a Manx politician, who was a Member of the Legislative Council in the Isle of Man from 1982 to 2013. Early life Edmund was born in 1938 in Ballasalla and was educated at Castle Rushen and then worked for the Ronaldsway Aircraft Company from 1964, until 1975. He then stood for the Manx Labour Party in the House of Keys election of 1975 and was elected as one of the MHKs for Rushen. He continued in this position until his elevation to the Council in 1982. David Cannan
John David Qualtrough Cannan (24 August, 1936 – 2022) was the Member of the House of Keys for Michael and Chairman of the Isle of Man Water Authority. He was the son of former Chaplain of the House of Keys, Rev Canon Charles Cannan. He was educated at King William's College and was a businessman in the tea and rubber industry before going into politics. In the 1970s he was a Conservative Party councillor in England before returning to the Isle of Man and becoming the Michael MHK in 1982. He was elected Speaker of the House of Keys in 2000, and remained as such until the 2001 General Election. He retired from the House of Keys at the 2011 General Election. In 2006 he stood for Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, and then Speaker, but was unsuccessful in both.
