Mify
Mify () are a rock band formed in Leningrad in 1966. History 1966-1967: The Red Roosters The history of the group began in September 1966, when Sergey Danilov and Gennadiy Barikhnovskiy were both eighth-graders at School No. 216 in the Kirovsky District of Leningrad. In the midst of Beatlemania and the popularity of rock and roll, they decided to start their own group. In one of their early performances as a duet, they played music from the film ''Lyudi nad oblakami'' () at a school event. Soon after, Dmitry Zadvornov, then a freshman, joined the group as a vocalist. In the summer of 1966, the group was joined by bassist Pyotr “Pete” Bezdudnov, a student of the neighboring School No. 501, and drummer Valeriy Sorokin, a classmate of the group’s founders. Zadvornov suggested naming the group “The Red Roosters” after Willie Dixon's blues standard “Little Red Rooster”, which he knew from The Rolling Stones' rendition. ''Roksi'' (, sometimes anglicized as ''Roxy'') was a Soviet rock samizdat journal founded in 1977. It published 15 issues between 1977 and 1990. ''Roksi'' is generally considered to be the first rock music periodical in the Soviet Union. History ''Roksi'' was established by Boris Grebenshchikov of Akvarium and Beatles-fanatic Kolya Vasin as a '' samizdat'' rock fanzine. Each copy was typewritten, with photographs glued to the pages. In order to comply with Soviet publishing laws at the time, no more than six copies were made of each issue. The editorial committee for the first three issues consisted of Grebenshchikov, Vasin, Mike Naumenko of Zoopark, photographer Natasha Vasil'eva, and Yuri Il'chenko of Mify and Mashina Vremeni, with Grebenshchikov as editor-in-chief. Mashina Vremeni () is a Russian rock band founded in 1969. Mashina Vremeni was a pioneer of Soviet rock music and remains one of the oldest still-active rock bands in Russia. The band's music incorporates elements of classic rock, blues, and bard's song. Mashina Vremeni's best known members are Andrei Makarevich (founder, principal singer-songwriter, public face of the band), Alexander Kutikov (bass player and producer/sound engineer), and Evgeny Margulis (guitarist/songwriter). Voskreseniye
Voskreseniye (russian: Воскресение) is a Russian rock band. History The band was formed in 1979, when drummer Sergey Kavagoe decided to leave Mashina Vremeni and form his own group. Kavagoe was joined by Mashina Vremeni's bassist, Evgeny Margulis. Alexey Romanov became the group's leader and songwriter, and Alexey Makarevich joined as guitarist. During this period the band released the successful albums ''Voskreseniye 1'' () and ''Voskreseniye 2'' (). In 1980, Margulis left the group, after being invited to join the group Araks, and Konstantin Nikolsky, Andrey Sapunov, and Mikhail Shevyakov joined the line-up. In August 1982, Romanov and the group's sound engineer, Alexander Arutyunov, were arrested and charged with private entrepreneurial activity. Evgeny Margulis
Evgeny Shulimovich Margulis (russian: Евге́ний Шу́лимович Маргу́лис; born 25 December 1955) is a Russian rock and blues musician. He was a member of the bands Mashina Vremeni (1975-1979, 1990-2012) and Voskreseniye (1979-1980, 1994-2003) and currently performs solo. He is considered a "guru" of Moscow rock ‘n’ roll. In 1999, he was awarded the title of Meritorious Artist. Biography Evgeny Margulis was born in 1955 in Moscow to a middle-class family of Jewish descent. His father was an engineer and his mother was a high school teacher. Margulis originally planned to become a doctor, but decided to change his career plans: at the age of 19 he joined the well-known band Mashina Vremeni as a guitarist. Samizdat
Samizdat (russian: самиздат, lit=self-publishing, links=no) was a form of dissident activity across the Eastern Bloc in which individuals reproduced censored and underground makeshift publications, often by hand, and passed the documents from reader to reader. The practice of manual reproduction was widespread, because most typewriters and printing devices required official registration and permission to access. This was a grassroots practice used to evade official Soviet censorship. Name origin and variations Etymologically, the word ''samizdat'' derives from ''sam'' (, "self, by oneself") and ''izdat'' (, an abbreviation of , , "publishing house"), and thus means "self-published". Jazz Fusion
Jazz fusion (also known as fusion and progressive jazz) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll.
