Midnight is an unincorporated community located in Humphreys County, Mississippi, United States. Midnight is approximately north of Louise and southwest of Silver City along Mississippi Highway 149. Although Midnight is unincorporated, it has a zip code of 39115. History According to tradition, the original town site was won in a midnight poker hand, hence the name of the community. A post office called Midnight was established in 1897. The post office building survived the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. On October 5, 2002 the Midnight post office closed. By 2010, it had been demolished as part of the USPS's service cuts. In the 2000s, resident Gwen McKenzie and other Midnight residents lobbied to have a highway sign installed that indicated the direction to Midnight. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with inundated in depths of up to over the course of several months in early 1927. The period cost of the damage has been estimated to be between $246 million and $1 billion, which ranges from $–$ billion in dollars. George Cartwright (born December 10, 1950, in Midnight, Mississippi) is an American musician, best known as the founder of the band Curlew in 1979 in New York City. Besides playing soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones, he has composed music for Curlew, his own solo recordings and other music ensembles such as Zeitgeist. He attended the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York, and currently resides in Minnesota. Rolling Fork is a city in and the county seat of Sharkey County, Mississippi, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the town was 1,883. History Thomas Y. Chaney settled here in 1828, and was the first European-American settler in the area. The Choctaw, longtime indigenous occupants, had been forced out by new settler pressure and government treaties to gain their land. Deer Creek (Mississippi), Deer Creek flows through the settlement.
