Binalup/Middleton Beach is a coastal suburb of Albany, Western Australia, Albany, Western Australia, located within the City of Albany approximately east of the city centre. The traditional owners, the Noongar peoples, know the place as Binalup meaning ''the place of first light'' since the sun rises over the waters in the morning. The main road between the city and the locality is via Middleton Road, Albany, Middleton Road. It is home to a caravan park and numerous holiday units which provide accommodation for visitors to the Albany region. Albany ( ; ) is a port city in the Great Southern region in the Australian state of Western Australia, southeast of Perth, the state capital. The city centre is at the northern edge of Princess Royal Harbour, which is a part of King George Sound. Ellen Cove Jetty
Ellen Cove Jetty also known as Middleton Beach Jetty is a jetty found at the southern end of Middleton Beach in King George Sound in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Work commenced on the jetty with piles being driven into the sand bed at Ellen Cove in late 1899; construction was completed in 1901, at a cost of £150. The jetty served in the transport of goods and people of Albany. It is now primarily used for recreational purposes. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and wood, 15 concrete piles set at regular intervals with wooden decking spanning the piles. The jetty has been rebuilt several times with no evidence that any of the original structure remains. Both the jetty and the mature Norfolk Island pine trees along the shoreline were listed with the Heritage Council of Western Australia in 2000. Middleton Beach Shark Barrier
Middleton Beach shark barrier, also referred to as the Albany shark barrier and the Ellen Cove shark barrier, is a shark barrier to prevent sharks entering the main swimming area at Ellen Cove at the southern end of Middleton Beach, a popular swimming beach in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Background There has never been a fatal shark attack at Middleton Beach but the beach is closed several times a year as a result of shark sightings. In 2008 Jason Cull was attacked by a great white shark just offshore from the beach. The shark bit his left leg; Cull fought it off and was rescued shortly afterward. The Premier of Western Australia, Colin Barnett, introduced a shark drum-line baiting program in 2014 following seven fatal shark attacks in WA in three years.
