Midas, Kentucky
Midas is an unincorporated community located in Floyd County, Kentucky. It is located around the intersection of Midas Road and Kentucky Route 550, North of Hueysville (separated by Midas Tunnel) and West of Eastern. Not much remains except some scattered residences and Midas Road and the Midas Tunnel. CSX E&BV Subdivision passes through Midas and crosses Midas Road after exiting the tunnel. Civil War history On January 10, 1862, the Battle of Middle Creek was fought near Prestonburg. Brig. Gen. Humphrey Marshall and his Confederate troops retreated using the Left Fork of Middle Creek and went south and camped near Midas at the Joseph Gearheart Farm, located midway between Midas and Hueysville. After staying for a week, Humphrey and his troops traveled farther up Beaver Creek before retreating out of Kentucky and into Virginia. There are 120 counties in the U.S. Commonwealth of Kentucky. Despite ranking 37th in size by area, Kentucky has 120 counties, fourth among states (including Virginia's independent cities). The original motivation for having so many counties was to ensure that residents in the days of poor roads and horseback travel could make a round trip from their home to the county seat in a single day, as well as being able to travel from one county seat to the next in the same fashion. Later, however, politics began to play a part, with citizens who disagreed with their county government petitioning the state to create a new county. Floyd County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,942. Its county seat is Prestonsburg. The county, founded in 1800, is named for Colonel John Floyd (1750–1783). The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Kentucky Route 550 (KY 550) is a state highway in eastern Kentucky that runs from Kentucky Routes 15 and 80 in northwestern Hazard to Kentucky Route 80 and Judge Road in Eastern via Darfork, Dwarf, Fisty, Carrie, Hindman, Garner, Mousie, Lackey, Garrett, and Eastern. E&BV Subdivision
