Michael Victor Berry
Sir Michael Victor Berry (born 14 March 1941 in Frimley) is a British theoretical physics, theoretical physicist. He is the Melville Wills Professor of Physics (Emeritus) at the University of Bristol. He is known for the Geometric phase, Berry phase, a phenomenon observed in both quantum mechanics and classical optics, as well as Berry connection and curvature. He specializes in semiclassical physics (asymptotic physics, quantum chaos), applied to wave phenomena in quantum mechanics and other areas such as optics. Early life and education Berry was brought up in a List of British Jewish scientists, Jewish family and was the son of a London taxi driver and a dressmaker. Berry earned a Bachelor of Science, BSc in physics from the University of Exeter in 1962 where he met his first wife (a sociology student with whom he had his first child) and a PhD from the University of St. Andrews in 1965. Quantum Chaos
Quantum chaos is a branch of physics focused on how chaotic classical dynamical systems can be described in terms of quantum theory. The primary question that quantum chaos seeks to answer is: "What is the relationship between quantum mechanics and classical chaos?" The correspondence principle states that classical mechanics is the classical limit of quantum mechanics, specifically in the limit as the ratio of the Planck constant to the action of the system tends to zero. If this is true, then there must be quantum mechanisms underlying classical chaos (although this may not be a fruitful way of examining classical chaos). Frimley
Frimley is a town in the Borough of Surrey Heath, in Surrey, England. It lies approximately south-west of central London. The town is of Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain, Saxon origin, although it is not listed in Domesday Book of 1086. History The name ''Frimley'' is derived from the Anglo-Saxons, Saxon name ''Fremma's Lea'', which means "Fremma's clearing". Lorentz Medal is a distinction awarded every four years by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
