Michael Thompson (lacrosse)
Michael "Mike" Thompson (b. on June 16, 1977 in Akwesasne, Ontario) is an Iroquois retired professional box lacrosse player. Thompson played seven seasons in the National Lacrosse League, six with the Buffalo Bandits. He signed with the Bandits on August 18, 2006 to replace Ken Montour as back-up goalie to Steve Dietrich. Thompson took over the starting duties from Dietrich due to injuries during the 2007 season and played well enough to inevitably make Dietrich expendable after the season. In 2008, Montour came back to Buffalo, he and Thompson formed a goalie platoon for the Bandits leading to the franchise's fourth NLL Championship. Thompson would make 39 saves, including one as time expired, as he went the whole way in the 2008 Champion's Cup. Buffalo Bandits
The Buffalo Bandits are an American professional box lacrosse team based in Buffalo, New York, that competes in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The team plays its home games at KeyBank Center. The Bandits played in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1992 MILL season, 1992 to 1997 MILL season, 1997, then in its successor the NLL since 1998 NLL season, 1998. The Bandits are one of the oldest franchises in the league, behind the Albany FireWolves (which were founded in 1987 as the original Philadelphia Wings (1987–2014) franchise) and the Colorado Mammoth (which were founded in 1987 as the Baltimore Thunder). 2007 NLL Season
The 2007 National Lacrosse League season, the 21st in the history of the NLL (including the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League and Major Indoor Lacrosse League years) began on December 30, 2006 and concluded with the championship game on May 12, 2007. The Rochester Knighthawks finished the regular season with a 14–2 record, winning their last 12 games. The Rochester Knighthawks (also known as the K-Hawks) are an American professional box lacrosse team based in Rochester, New York, that competes in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The team plays its home games at Blue Cross Arena. The Knighthawks are owned by Terry Pegula who purchased the intellectual property of the team from former owner Curt Styres. Styres moved the previous version of the team to Halifax, Nova Scotia, as the Halifax Thunderbirds at the end of the 2018–2019 season. As an expansion team they are not a continuation of the previous Knighthawks. All records and championships followed the original franchise to Halifax. 2008 NLL Season
The 2008 National Lacrosse League season, the 22nd in the history of the NLL, began on December 29, 2007, and concluded with the Buffalo Bandits winning the championship game over the Portland LumberJax on May 17, 2008. In an odd coincidence, all four eastern division teams that made the playoffs finished with identical 10–6 records. Due to tiebreakers, the Buffalo Bandits clinched first place overall, followed by the Minnesota Swarm, New York Titans in their playoff debut, and the Philadelphia Wings in their return to the playoffs after a five-year absence. There was also a tie atop the west division standings, as the San Jose Stealth and Colorado Mammoth both finished with 9–7 records. Steve Dietrich
Steve "Chugger" Dietrich (born February 18, 1970, in Kitchener, Ontario) is the general manager of the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League. Dietrich is also a NLL Hall of Fame goaltender who has played with the Calgary Roughnecks, Buffalo Bandits, Rochester Knighthawks, Detroit Turbos, Baltimore Thunder, and Toronto Rock. Professional career Dietrich played six seasons with each of the Bandits and Knighthawks. He led the Bandits to the NLL Championship game twice, in 2004 and 2006, and also won the Championship with the Knighthawks in 1997, when he was named Championship game MVP. He was named NLL Goaltender of the Year in both 2005 and 2006, and was the first goaltender to be named NLL MVP in 2006. On November 22, 2010, Dietrich announced his retirement as a player in the NLL to become the Toronto Rock's goaltending coach. Ottawa Rebel
The Ottawa Rebel was a team in the National Lacrosse League based in Ottawa, Ontario from 2001 until 2003. They initially played at the Corel Centre (now called the Canadian Tire Centre), but part-way through the 2002 season moved to the smaller, but centrally located, Ottawa Civic Centre. From 1997 until 2000 the team was located in Syracuse, New York and was called the Syracuse Smash. The Rebel was owned by the Brad Watters group which also brought lacrosse to Toronto and Montreal. In their first season in Ottawa, the Rebel had one win and thirteen losses and finished last of nine teams. Their second season was slightly better, with four wins and twelve losses, but due to tie breakers they finished fourth in the Northern Division and thirteenth overall behind the Calgary Roughnecks, who also finished with a 4–12 record.
