Michael Burrows (computer Scientist)
Michael Burrows, FRS (born 1963) is a British computer scientist, one of the creators of AltaVista, and co-author of the paper that first described the Burrows-Wheeler Transform. Born in Britain, as of 2018 he lives in the United States, although he remains a British citizen. Education Burrows studied Electronic Engineering with Computer Science at University College London and then completed his PhD in the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, where he was a postgraduate student of Churchill College, Cambridge supervised by David Wheeler. Career Upon leaving Cambridge, he moved to USA and worked at the Systems Research Center (SRC) at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) where, with Louis Monier, he was one of the two main creators of AltaVista. Michael Burrows is an Australian singer and songwriter from Melbourne, Victoria. Burrows' demos were first discovered by Neil Finn (Crowded House and Fleetwood Mac) through Medicine Mondiale, an Auckland-based social enterprise. Soon after, Finn recorded the vocals for two of Burrows' songs at Roundhead Studios in Auckland, New Zealand. In 2015, Burrows was handpicked by Martha Wainwright to open for her sold-out acoustic tour in Australia, despite not having any music officially released. From there, Burrows started working with Grammy Award winning songwriter Frank Myers, fellow Grammy Award winner, Steve Marcantonio and former musical director for Faith Hill and Reba McEntire, Jimmy Nichols. With the talented and experienced professionals, Burrows recorded a few tracks at the legendary Ocean Way Studios in Nashville and released his debut single "Please Don’t Cry" on 27 April 2018. Michael Andrew James Burrows (born 1961) is a bishop in the Church of Ireland. He was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Tuam, Limerick and Killaloe on 14 January 2022, having previously served as Bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory. Life Bishop Burrows is the son of a Church of Ireland clergyman. He was educated at Wesley College, Dublin, Wesley College, Dublin and Trinity College, Dublin and ordained as a priest in the Church of Ireland in 1988. His first post was as a curate at St Luke, Douglas, Cork, Douglas. Burrows was then a Minor canon, Minor Canon at St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin from 1991 until 1994. He was then in charge at St Peter, Bandon, County Cork, Bandon from 1994 until his appointment as Dean (Christianity), Dean. He was appointed Dean of Cork at the Saint Finbarre's Cathedral, Cathedral Church of St Fin Barre in 2002. Michael Thomas Burrows (born November 8, 1999) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2024. Career Burrows attended Waterford High School in Waterford, Connecticut. As a senior in 2018, he went 6–0 with a 0.38 ERA and 98 strikeouts over 44 innings. After the season, he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft. He signed for $500,000, forgoing his commitment to play college baseball for the UConn Huskies baseball team. Burrows made his professional debut with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Pirates, pitching 14 innings and not giving up an earned run. He played the 2019 season with the West Virginia Black Bears of the Low–A New York–Penn League with whom he started 11 games and went 2–3 with a 4.33 ERA over innings.
