MiR Außen Ganz
''Mir'' (, ; ) was a space station operated in low Earth orbit A low Earth orbit (LEO) is an geocentric orbit, orbit around Earth with a orbital period, period of 128 minutes or less (making at least 11.25 orbits per day) and an orbital eccentricity, eccentricity less than 0.25. Most of the artificial object ... from 1986 to 2001, first by the Soviet Union and later by the Russia, Russian Federation. ''Mir'' was the first modular space station and was assembled in orbit from 1986 to 1996. It had a greater mass than any previous spacecraft. At the time it was the largest artificial satellite in orbit, succeeded by the International Space Station (ISS) after ''Mir'''s orbital decay, orbit decayed. The station served as a microgravity laboratory , research laboratory in which crews conducted experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and spacecraft systems with a goal of developing technologies required for permanent occupation of Outer ...

Crew seat assignments Mission highlights STS-89 launched on January 22, 1998 and was the eighth of nine planned missions to Mir and the fifth involving an exchange of U.S. astronauts. Astronaut David Wolf (astronaut), David Wolf, who had been on Mir since late September 1997, was replaced by Astronaut Andy Thomas, Andrew Thomas. Thomas spent approximately 4 months on the orbiting Russian facility before returning to Earth when Space Shuttle Discovery, ''Discovery'' docked to Mir in late May during STS-91.
