Merișor Derailment
The Merișor derailment was a railway accident that took place on 8 April 2017 at , Bănița, Romania, on the Târgu Jiu to Simeria line, killing both crew members on board. Background The railway line The accident location at Merișor is situated on the line between Filiași and Simeria, commonly known as the "Jiu Valley Line", since it crosses the Carpathian Mountains along the Jiu (river), Jiu River, being considered one of the most scenic railway lines in Romania. The exact section at Merișor is situated on the Petroșani to Subcetate segment of the line, known for its steep inclines and twisty sections as its leaving the Petroșani basin trying to cross a hilly area to get to the Hațeg basin. Predeal
Predeal (; ) is a town in Brașov County, Muntenia, Romania. Predeal, a mountain resort town, is the highest town in Romania. It is located in the Prahova Valley, Muntenia at an elevation of over . The town administers three villages: Pârâul Rece, Timișu de Jos, and Timișu de Sus. Predeal is twinned with Macugnaga, Italy. Beginning in the 2000s, the area experienced a boom in construction, and now many wealthy families own mountain retreats in Predeal. During the 2013 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival, it hosted the cross-country skiing and snowboarding competitions.
