Merian Family
The Merian family is a patrician (post-Roman Europe), patrician family of Basel, Switzerland. It consists of two branches (an 'elder Basel line' and a 'younger' one) who were citizens of Basel from 1498 and from 1549/1553. The family were represented in the Grand Council of Basel-Stadt in 1532 and grew to become distinguished aldermen. Its notable members include the 18th century politician and the 19th century banker Christoph Merian, who founded the renowned Basel charity ''Christoph Merian Stiftung''. The younger Basel line includes a Frankfurt sub-branch founded by the engraver Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650), whose descendants became artists during the Baroque period and ran what became one of Europe's largest publishers in the 17th century. Plan De Mérian
The Merian map of Paris () was created in 1615 by Matthäus Merian the Elder. It presents a bird's eye view looking east with a scale of about 1 to 7,000. The map originally consisted of two engraved plates (50 x 37 cm each) with the left and right halves of the map and was printed with 2 columns of portraits (each 50 x 13 cm) on the left and right sides of the respective map halves. The entire assembly was 50 x 101.5 cm.Boutier 2007, pp. 120–122. At the top is a banner with the title: ("Map of the town, city, university and suburbs with the description of its antiquity and particularities"). Christoph Merian (22 January 1800 – 22 August 1858) was a Swiss banker, businessman, land owner and philanthropist of the Merian family. In 1840, Merian was the largest private land owner in Switzerland and one of the richest Swiss citizens. Early life and education Merian was born 22 January 1800 in Basel, Switzerland, to Christoph Merian Sr. (1769–1849), a merchant and manufacturer, and Valeria Merian (née Hoffmann). He had five siblings, of whom four died prematurely, and his sister Susanna died aged 25. His father was once the richest Swiss citizen with an estimated net worth of 9 million Swiss Francs at the time of his death in 1849 (approximately 450 million in 2025). Leon Merian
Leon Merian (17 September 1923 – 15 August 2007) was an American jazz trumpeter and teacher. Dizzy Gillespie described his playing as "one of the most beautiful sounds you'll ever hear". Merian was also a French teacher and public school administrator. Life He was born Leon Megerdichian in South Braintree, Massachusetts, on 17 September 1923, to Armenian immigrant parents. Merian learned trumpet from Georges Mager. He was a member of Lucky Millinder's band when it toured the segregated south; he was not welcome at either "white" or "colored" establishments, and ended up sleeping on the tour bus. Merian moved to 20th Century Fox Records in November 1958. He later had his own band; one member of it was Herb Phillips. His publications included the well known ''Trumpet Isometrics''. Charles Merian Cooper (January 16, 1856 – November 14, 1923) was an American attorney and politician who served two terms as a U.S. Representative from Florida from 1893 until 1897. Early life and education Cooper was born on January 16, 1856, in Athens, Georgia. His father, Charles Phillip Cooper, served as a United States Treasury Department agent until the American Civil War, when he was appointed to help organize the Confederate States Treasury Department. In 1864, he and his family moved to Jacksonville, Florida in order to escape Union forces. Cooper studied law at Gainesville Academy, graduating in 1867. He was accepted into the Florida Bar in the same year, and began a private practice in St. Augustine, Florida.
