Merched Y Wawr
is a voluntary, non-political, organisation for women in Wales. It is similar to the Women's Institute (WI) but its activities are conducted through the medium of Welsh. Its aims are to promote women's issues and to support culture, education and the arts in Wales. History was established in 1967 when the WI insisted on English, one of the two main languages of Wales, as the official language of the movement. There had been an historic use of Welsh in the WI, and with over two hundred and fifty branches in Wales this decision was unpopular. The WI branch in the village of Parc, Llanycil broke away from the movement and began Merched y Wawr, which would operate solely in Welsh. The movement grew quickly and in the late 1980s the organisation had over 10,000 members and more than 275 branches. Zonia Bowen
Zonia Margarita Bowen (, 23 April 1926 – 18 March 2024) was an English-born writer, linguist, and activist in Wales. The founder of the women's organisation Merched y Wawr, Bowen worked to promote the Welsh language and Welsh culture. Early life and education Zonia Margarita North was born in Ormesby St Margaret, Norfolk, England, in 1926. She grew up in Heckmondwike, Yorkshire. She studied French at Bangor University in Wales during the 1940s. While there, she began to learn Welsh for the first time, to connect with friends and neighbours. Despite her own English background, she became passionate about the Welsh language and Welsh identity. In 1947, she married the Welsh poet Geraint Bowen. They had four children; several of her grandchildren are members of the bands Plu and Y Bandana. Pen-y-cae (sometimes spelled Penycae) is a village and Community (Wales), community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. The population of the community taken at the United Kingdom 2011 Census, 2011 census was 3,389. It adjoins the larger village of Rhosllanerchrugog. Etymology Pen-y-cae means 'head of the field' or 'end of the field'. Although often written as one word without hyphens, in its correct form the name is hyphenised due to the definite article 'y' preceding a single-syllable element. Gwenllian ferch Llywelyn (June 1282 – 7 June 1337), commonly known as Gwenllian of Wales, was the daughter of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last native Prince of Wales (). Gwenllian is sometimes confused with Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd, who lived two centuries earlier. Lineage Gwenllian (pronounced ) was born in the Gwynedd royal home in Abergwyngregyn near Bangor, Gwynedd. Llanycil
Llanycil is a Community (Wales), community in the county of Gwynedd, Wales, near Bala, Gwynedd, Bala; it is 99.9 miles (160.7 km) from Cardiff and 176.2 miles (283.6 km) from London. In 2011 the population of Llanycil was 416, with 80.4% able to speak Welsh language, Welsh. The community includes the small settlements of Parc, Rhyd-uchaf and Llidiardau. It is a very sparsely populated community covering about 83 square kilometres. The mountain Arenig Fawr is within the community.
