Merchandising (play)
''Merchandising'' is a 1999 play by American playwright David Henry Hwang. The play was written as a special commission from the Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana Festival. The 1999 Festival sold "T(ext) Shirt Plays" by authors such as Wendy Wasserstein, Tony Kushner Anthony Robert Kushner (born July 16, 1956) is an American author, playwright, and screenwriter. Among his stage work, he is most known for ''Angels in America'', which earned a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, as well as its subsequent acclaime ..., and Mac Wellman. Hwang's play, printed on a navy blue shirt, depicted two filmmakers who lament the failure of their picture and the nature of merchandising in Hollywood. David Henry Hwang
David Henry Hwang (born August 11, 1957) is an American playwright, librettist, screenwriter, and theater professor at Columbia University in New York City. He has won three Obie Awards for his plays '' FOB'', '' Golden Child'', and '' Yellow Face''. He has one Tony Award ('' M. Butterfly'') and two other nominations (''Golden Child'' and ''Flower Drum Song''). Three of his works (''M. Butterfly'', ''Yellow Face'', and ''Soft Power'') have been finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Early life He was born in 1957 in Los Angeles, California, to Henry Yuan Hwang, the founder of Far East National Bank, and Dorothy Hwang, a piano teacher. The oldest of three children, he has two younger sisters. Actors Theatre Of Louisville
Actors Theatre of Louisville is a non-profit performing arts theater located in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Actors Theatre was founded in 1964 following the merging of two local companies, Actors, Inc. and Theatre Louisville, operated by Louisville natives Ewel Cornett and Richard Block. Humana Festival
Humana Festival of New American Plays was an internationally renowned festival which celebrated the contemporary American playwright. Produced annually in Louisville, Kentucky by Actors Theatre of Louisville, the festival showcased new theatrical works and drew producers, critics, playwrights, and theatre lovers from around the world. The festival was founded in 1976 by Jon Jory, who was Producing Director of Actors Theatre of Louisville from 1969 to 2000. Since 1979 The Humana Festival has been sponsored by the Humana Foundation which is the philanthropic arm of Humana. The Humana Festival was shut down permanently in 2022 after holding its final festival in 2021. Wendy Wasserstein (October 18, 1950 – January 30, 2006) was an American playwright. She was an Andrew Dickson White Professor-at-Large at Cornell University. She received the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1989 for her play '' The Heidi Chronicles''. Anthony Robert Kushner (born July 16, 1956) is an American author, playwright, and screenwriter.
