Merced (district)
Merced is a district of the San José canton, in the San José province of Costa Rica. It is one of the four administrative units that form San José downtown () properly. This division is merely commercial, but covers an important part of "josefino" life and activities. Geography Merced has an area of 2.17 km² and an elevation of 1154 metres. National Primary Route 1, formally known as (North Interamerican Road), is the northern segment of the Pan-American Highway (locally in Central America known as the Inter-American Highway) that traverses Costa Rica. The Costa Rica 2011 Census was undertaken by the National Institute of Statistics and Census of Costa Rica, National Institute of Statistics and Census (''Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos'' (INEC)) in Costa Rica. The semi-autonomous government body, INEC, was created by Census Law No. 7839 on 4 November 1998. The Centro Costarricense de la Ciencia y la Cultura (Costa Rican Center of Science and Culture) is a science and culture museum complex in Costa Rica. Located in a fortress-like building that once served as the central penitentiary between 1910 and 1979, the center was inaugurated in 1994. It contains a number of important institutions including the National Auditorium, the Museo de los Niños, the National Gallery and a number of others. History The center was established in the building that housed the old Central Penitentiary, which itself was founded in 1909, and was open for 70 years. This penitentiary was closed in 1979 by Rodrigo Carazo's administration leaving the building empty and abandoned for several years. After the prison closed, it became a museum.
