Menntaskólinn á Ísafirði
Menntaskólinn á Ísafirði is an Icelandic gymnasium. It is located in Ísafjörður in the Westfjords. The school year consists of two semesters, fall and spring. Each semester students take a full-time load of courses worth two or three credits each. Over three years, they take a total of 140+ credits and matriculate with an Icelandic Stúdentspróf which is the standard prerequisite for university admission in Iceland. This qualification is also accepted for admission to universities around the world. History The school was founded in 1970 and its first principal was Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson. Ísafjörður
Ísafjörður (pronounced , meaning ''ice fjord'', literally ''fjord of ices'') is a town in the northwest of Iceland. The oldest part of Ísafjörður with the town centre is located on a spit of sand, or ''eyri'', in Skutulsfjörður, a fjord which meets the waters of the larger fjord Ísafjarðardjúp. Alþingi
The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the supreme national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at (' thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. After Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing lost its legislative power, which was not restored until 1904 when Iceland gained home rule from Denmark. For 641 years, the Althing did not serve as the parliament of Iceland; ultimate power rested with the Norwegian, and subsequently the Danish throne. Einar Kristinn Guðfinnsson (born 2 December 1955) is an Icelandic politician. He was speaker of the Althing, in office 2013 until 2016. He was Iceland's Minister of Fisheries from September 2005, and became Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture when the two ministries merged on 1 January 2008 until 1 February 2009. Andri Rúnar Bjarnason (born 12 November 1990) is an Icelandic professional footballer who plays as a forward for Stjarnan. In 2017, he tied the Besta deild karla single season goal record with 19 goals. The following year, he debuted for the Iceland national team. Eiríkur Örn Norðdahl (born 1 July 1978) is an Icelandic writer. For a long time most noted as an experimental poet, in the 2010s he came to prominence as one of Iceland's foremost prose writers. ''Morgunblaðið'' (, ''The Morning Paper'') is an Icelandic daily newspaper. ''Morgunblaðið''s website, mbl.is, is the most popular website in Iceland. It is currently the country's only daily printed newspaper and the newspaper of record. Ólína Þorvarðardóttir
Ólína Kjerúlf Þorvarðardóttir (born 8 September 1958) is an Icelandic writer, scholar and former journalist and politician. She was a member of the Althing from 2009 to 2016, representing the Social Democratic Alliance for the Northwest Constituency. Life and career Ólína was born in Reykjavík but moved to Ísafjörður at the age of 14 when her father was hired as the local District Commissioner. She studied at Menntaskólinn á Ísafirði where she met her future husband, Sigurður Pétursson with whom she has had five children. Ólína has been an active scholar in social Sciences, Icelandic litterature and folklore. Since 2022 she has been a dean and a professor at Bifröst University in Iceland.
