Memorial High School (St. Marys, Ohio)
Memorial High School is a public high school in St. Marys, Ohio. It is the only high school in the St. Marys City School District. Memorial High School was designated "Excellent" (the highest designation given) by the Ohio Department of Education in the 2007-2008 ODE report card. The nickname of their athletic teams is the Roughriders. They are a member of the Western Buckeye League. Although the official name of the high school is Memorial, local media generally refers to the school's athletic teams as the St. Marys Roughriders. The school's colors are royal blue and gold. The original school building, built in 1923, was located near Skip Baughman Stadium. However, on November 7, 2007, St. Marys City School voters passed a bond issue for the construction of a new high school. Mel Land
Melvin Land (November 30, 1955 – April 27, 1997) was a former American football linebacker who played four seasons of professional football. After playing collegiately with the Michigan State Spartans, he was selected in the third round of the 1979 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins and spent his rookie season with them. The Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is "to foster the growth and development of ethnic minorities at all levels of sports both nationally and internationally". It currently is focused on athletics in North America, including professional leagues, college sports and high school athletics. The organization offers scholarships and actively promotes the hiring of ethnic minority coaches in professional and college sports. The BCA was formed in 1988 as the Black Coaches Association, when two separate African American coaching groups (basketball and American football) merged and extended their work to coaches in all sports. 1957 Ohio State Buckeyes Football Team
The 1957 Ohio State Buckeyes football team represented the Ohio State University in the 1957 Big Ten Conference football season. The team was led by captains Galen Cisco and Leo Brown. They were the third national title team in Ohio State football history. They were coached by Hall of Fame coach Woody Hayes. The Buckeyes were awarded the title by the UPI Coaches Poll and represented the Big Ten Conference in the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes finished the 1956 season with a two shut-out losses to Iowa and Michigan. Going into the 1957 season fans had a feeling of rebuilding. The feeling was made stronger with an opening loss to unranked TCU. To make matters worse, Michigan State, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa were all ranked in the Top 6 of the AP Poll Rankings while Ohio State would not be ranked until late October.
