Port Fairy was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria from 1889 to 1927. It was created when the Electoral district of Belfast was renamed. Bryan O'Loghlen was the last member for Belfast, serving 1888–1889. It centred on the coastal town of Port Fairy in western Victoria. Ernie Bond (politician)
Ernest Edward "Ernie" Bond (29 June 1897 – 25 July 1984) was an Australian politician. He was born in Heywood, Victoria, Heywood to rural worker Robert Bond and Sarah Jane Mullens. He attended Geelong High School and became a schoolteacher at Lavers Hill, Victoria, Lavers Hill and Heywood, and then head teacher at Greenwald, Victoria, Greenwald and Condah, Victoria, Condah. On 20 July 1923 he married Ethel Thomas, with whom he had three children. A member of the Australian Labor Party (Victorian Branch), Labor Party's Heywood branch from the age of seventeen, he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Electoral district of Glenelg (Victoria), Glenelg in 1924; he transferred to Electoral district of Port Fairy and Glenelg, Port Fairy and Glenelg in 1927. In 1932 he was expelled from the Labor Party over his support for the Premiers' Plan; he was re-elected as an independent and was readmitted to the Labor Party in 1937. Maurice Blackburn
Maurice McCrae Blackburn (19 November 1880 – 31 March 1944) was an Australian politician and socialist lawyer, noted for his protection of the interests of workers and the establishment of the legal firm known as Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. Early life Blackburn was born on 19 November 1880 in Inglewood, Victoria. He was the son of Thomasann Cole (née McCrae) and Maurice Blackburn. His father, a bank manager, was the son of architect James Blackburn. Following the death of his father in 1887, Blackburn and his mother moved to Melbourne where he was educated at Melbourne Grammar School, matriculating in 1896. He attended the University of Melbourne, graduating in arts and law in 1909, and began to practise as a lawyer a year later. In the same year, he also became a member of the Victorian Socialist Party and was soon editing its newspaper, ''The Socialist''. Later, in about 1908, he joined the Australian Labor Party. John Billson
John William Billson (10 January 1862 – 23 December 1924) was a British-born Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Fitzroy from 1900 to 1924 and the deputy leader of the state Labor Party from 1913 to 1924. Billson was born in Leicester, England, where he became a bootmaker and trade unionist. He married Sarah Jane Sarson Coverley on 14 October 1882; they had three children. Billson migrated to Australia in 1886, continued working as a bootmaker and became president of the Victorian Operative Bootmakers' Union in 1893–95, serving in that capacity during the prominent 1894-95 bootmakers' strike. His unionism made finding work difficult; he went briefly to Sydney, before returning to Victoria to become the union's general secretary from 1895 to 1901. Alfred Billson (Australian Politician)
Alfred Arthur Billson (11 January 1858 – 31 October 1930) was an Australian politician. He was born at Wooragee to brewer George Billson and Isabella Blades. He attended Beechworth Grammar School and Scotch College before succeeding his father as a brewer. On 28 June 1881 he married Laura Annie Fielder, with whom he had five children. The family brewery, Billson's Brewery, became the Anglo-Australian Brewery in 1892 (incorporated in 1902), which was amalgamated with brother George Henry Billson's Albury Brewing and Malting Company, to become the Border United Co-operative Breweries, Ltd in 1911. This sold out to a newly formed company, Murray Breweries, 1914. Billson served on Beechworth Shire Council from 1884 to 1893 and from 1895 to 1910, with three terms as president (1888–89, 1899–1901, 1908–09). Henry Beardmore
Henry Beardmore (7 February 1863 – 29 August 1932) was an Australian politician. He was born in Melton to butcher Edwin James Beardmore and Flora McDonald. He grew up in Benalla and became a butcher at Glenrowan before becoming a farmer near Wodonga. On 15 July 1885 he married Agnes Annie Lee, with whom he had four children; she died in 1892, and on 23 August 1893 he married Jessie Muirhead, with whom he had a further ten children. He served on Wodonga Shire Council from 1898 to 1922, with four terms as president (1900–01, 1908–10, 1911–12, 1914–17).
