Electoral District Of Ovens
Ovens (or The Ovens) was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria from 1856 to 1927. It was based in northern Victoria, bordered by the Ovens River in the south-west and included the town of Beechworth, Victoria. The district of Ovens was one of the initial districts of the first Victorian Legislative Assembly, 1856. It was defined in the Victorian Constitution Act 1855 (taking effect at the 1856 elections) as: Ovens was superseded by Electoral district of Wangaratta and Ovens in 1927. Members for Ovens One member initially, two from the increase in members of 1859. One again from the redistribution of 1889 when the Electoral district of Wangaratta and Rutherglen, amongst others, was created. John Carlisle (Australian Politician)
John Joseph Carlisle (c. 1863 – 18 June 1929) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mansfield to farmer William Carlisle and Anna Crockett. Following his father's death in 1871 the family moved to Yarrawonga, and Carlisle grew up to become a farmer in the area. He served on Yarrawonga Shire Council from 1895 to 1907 and was president from 1900 to 1901. In 1903 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Benalla and Yarrawonga, transferring to Benalla at the election the following year. A Liberal who joined the Economy faction of the Nationalist Party in 1917, he was a minister without portfolio from November 1917 to March 1918. In 1920 he joined the Victorian Farmers' Union, which became the Country Party. In 1926 he left the party after a dispute over a proposed redistribution, and stood at the 1927 election as an independent but was defeated. Hugh Campbell (Australian Politician)
Hugh John Munro Campbell (c. 1854 – 20 October 1921) was an Australian politician. He was born in Melbourne to merchant William Munro Campbell and Christina Matheson. He grew up in Portland from the age of eight, and was an apprentice grocer before entering the family business. On 21 January 1880 he married Harriett Jarrett, with whom he had three children; he would later remarry on 9 June 1920, to Ethel May Waddell. In 1906 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Glenelg. A Liberal, he was a minister without portfolio in the Nationalist government from 1918 to 1920. The electoral district of Gippsland East is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers most of eastern Victoria and includes the towns of Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Omeo, Maffra and Heyfield. Gippsland East is the state's third largest electorate in area and covers 27,544 square kilometres. The National Party held the seat without interruption from 1920 to 1999. James Cameron (Victorian Politician)
James Cameron (1846 – 13 July 1922) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Logie-Almond in Perthshire to farmer Alexander Cameron and Anne Pullar. The family moved to Victoria in 1854, settling first at Batesford and then at Beremboke. Cameron became a farmer at Orbost, and also developed business interests in mines at Nowa Nowa and in farm machinery. On 30 April 1879 he married Sarah Scouller, with whom he had seven children. He served on Tambo Shire Council from 1888 to 1892 (president 1885–86, 1890–91) and on Orbost Shire Council from 1892 to 1902 (president 1892–93). In 1902 he won a by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Gippsland East. He moved the no-confidence motion against the Bent government in 1908, and was a minister without portfolio from 1909 to 1913. John Bowser
Sir John Bowser (2 September 1856 – 10 June 1936), Australian politician, was the 26th Premier of Victoria. He was born in London, the son of an army officer, and arrived in Melbourne as a child with his family. He grew up at Bacchus Marsh and when he left school got a job with the ''Bacchus Marsh Express''. As a young man he went to Scotland and worked on newspapers while studying at University of Edinburgh. Returning to Australia, he settled in Wangaratta, where he farmed and managed the ''Wangaratta Chronicle'', which he eventually bought. In October 1894 Bowser was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Wangaratta and Rutherglen. Wangaratta and Rutherglen was renamed to Electoral district of Wangaratta in 1906; it was renamed again to Electoral district of Wangaratta and Ovens in 1927; Bowser held the seat until November 1929. Electoral District Of Essendon
The electoral district of Essendon is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first created in 1904 after the abolition of the larger Essendon and Flemington electorate, and covers some of the north-western suburbs of Melbourne, including Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale. The electorate was abolished in 1955, and Ascot Vale created, but in 1958, Ascot Vale was abolished and Essendon re-created. Essendon was held by the Liberals during the Bolte and Hamer governments, usually due to preferences from the Democratic Labor Party. The Liberals also won the seat after the Kennett landslide of 1992. Nowadays, the electorate lies within the Labor heartland of western and northern Melbourne, and is considered to be a relatively safe seat for Labor.
