Melrose Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club located in the town of Melrose, Scotland, Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The professional men's side competes in the as the "Southern Knights". The club plays at the Greenyards. History The club was formed in 1877 and was elected to full membership of the Scottish Rugby Union in 1880.Bath, p91 The club have played at the Greenyards since the club's inception. Melrose have been Scottish champions on ten occasions and Scottish cup winners four times. They lifted the Scottish Cup in 1997 to complete a domestic double and have also won the Border League on 17 occasions. Despite the population of Melrose hovering around 2000 for a number of years the team has been a consistently successful club in the upper echelons of the Scottish game. Melrose, Scotland
Melrose (, "bald moor") is a town and civil parishes in Scotland, civil parish in the Scottish Borders, historically in Roxburghshire. It lies within the Eildon Area committee, committee area of Scottish Borders Council. History The original Melrose was ''Mailros'', meaning "the bare peninsula" in Old Welsh or Brythonic languages, Brythonic. This referred to a neck of land by the River Tweed several miles east of the present town, where in the 6th century a monastery was founded associated with St Cuthbert. It was recorded by Bede, and also in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle with the name ''Magilros''. This monastery and settlement, later known as "Old Melrose", were long abandoned by the 12th century. Jock Allan (rugby Union)
Jock Allan (4 June 1905 – 29 December 1958) was a Scotland international rugby union player. He was the first married man to play for the Scotland side. Rugby Union career Amateur career Allan played for Melrose. He was in the Melrose 7s side that won the Melrose Sevens in 1931. Carl Hogg
Carl Hogg (born 5 July 1969) is a Scottish rugby union coach and former player. He won 5 international caps for Scotland in the 1990s. Playing career Amateur career Hogg was educated at St. Mary's School, Melrose and Earlston High School. He played the majority of his rugby career with Melrose RFC. Provincial and professional career He played for South of Scotland District. When the Scottish rugby union environment turned professional in 1996, he then played for the professional district Border Reivers. That side folded in 1998 and Hogg went on to play for Edinburgh. In 2001, he moved to Leeds Tykes and retired from playing two years later. He has captained every club side he has played for. International career He played for Scotland U19. Doddie Weir
George Wilson "Doddie" Weir (4 July 1970 – 26 November 2022) was a Scottish rugby union player who played as a Rugby union positions#Locks, lock. He made 61 international appearances for the Scotland national rugby union team, Scotland national team and represented the British & Irish Lions. With the change to professional rugby, he was recruited to Newcastle Falcons playing 1997–2002 and he captained the club. He returned to the Borders in 2002 but retired from professional rugby in 2004. In 2016 he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, motor neuron disease (MND). He became involved with campaigning and fundraising, setting up a foundation named "My Name's Doddie" which had raised £8 million for MND research by the time that he died from this condition. Frank Coutts (rugby Union)
Frank Coutts (8 July 1918 – 20 October 2008) was a Scotland international rugby union player. He became the 91st President of the Scottish Rugby Union. Rugby Union career Amateur career Coutts played for Melrose and the Army. He played for the Army against a 'Rest of Scotland' side on 15 February 1947. He played a charity match on 17 April 1948. This was C.R. Bruce's over-25 select XV against H. Waddell's under-25 select XV. This was in aid of the Glasgow Academy building fund and it drew the largest crowd of the season at New Anniesland. The match was won by H. Waddell's XV by 21-15. Coutts played well for the C.R. Bruce XV kicking a penalty and a conversion. He played for the Public School Wanderers in August 1949. Alex Hastie
Alexander James Hastie (29 July 1935 – 7 June 2010), also known as Alex Hastie or Eck Hastie was a Scotland international rugby union player. He played at Scrum-half; and was commonly linked with David Chisholm, his pairing at Fly-half for club and country. Rugby Union career Amateur career Hastie played for Melrose. Derek Stark (rugby Union)
Derek Stark (born 13 April 1966 in Kilmarnock) is a Scottish former international rugby union player who played for Glasgow Warriors at the Wing positions Rugby Union career Amateur career Stark grew up in Kilmarnock playing rugby with Kilmarnock RFC and working in his parents hotel there, The Foxbar Hotel. Walter Hart (rugby Union)
Walter Hart (born 30 March 1935) is a Scottish former international rugby union player. Born in Newtown St Boswells, Hart was a centre when he came to Melrose RFC in the mid-1950s, before being developed into a wing-forward. He made over 200 appearances for Melrose. Hart represented South of Scotland and twice attended Scottish trials prior to getting a national call up in 1960, for a short tour of South Africa. Francis Andrew Linden Laidlaw (20 September 1940 – 31 March 2025) was a Scotland international rugby union player.Bath, p119 Career Laidlaw played for Melrose.
