Melis Abzalov
Melis Abzalov (; November 18, 1938 – October 26, 2016) was an Uzbek people, Uzbek actor, film director, screenwriter, and film producer. His most famous films include ''Suyunchi'' (1982), ''Kelinlar qoʻzgʻoloni (film), Kelinlar qoʻzgʻoloni'' (1984), ''Armon (film), Armon'' (1986), and ''Oʻtgan kunlar (film), Oʻtgan kunlar'' (1997). Abzalov is celebrated as one of the founders and prominent members of the Uzbek film making industry. During his lifetime, he received many honorary titles and awards, including the title Honored Artist of the Uzbek SSR (1987). Life and work Melis Oripovich Abzalov was born on November 18, 1938, in Yangiyul, then the Uzbek SSR. He graduated from the Uzbekistan State Institute of Arts and Culture, Ostrovsky Tashkent Theatre Arts Institute in 1961. A year later, in 1962, he started working at Uzbekfilm. Anastasios Melis
Anastasios Melis is a Greek-American biologist at the University of California, Berkeley who elucidated the possibility of creating hydrogen from algae. He is currently The Grace Kase and Harry Y. Tsujimoto Distinguished Professor of Plant & Microbial Biology in the institution, elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Editor-in-Chief of the Planta journal. Hydrogen power is considered one of the key ways of producing electricity without continuing to use up fossil fuels. The added bonus of using algae in this way is that they could consume carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In 1998 Professor Anastasios Melis discovered, after following Hans Gaffron's work, that the deprivation of sulfur will cause ''Chlamydomonas reinhardtii'' algae to switch from producing oxygen to producing hydrogen. José Melis Guiu (February 27, 1920 – April 7, 2005) was a Cuban-American bandleader and television personality. Biography Melis was born in Havana, Cuba. He studied at the Havana Conservatory of Music and a Cuban government scholarship enabled him to continue his education in Paris. When he was 16, he arrived in the United States, graduated from the Juilliard School of Music and worked as a lounge pianist. During World War II, while he was serving as the musical director for the USO's New York City branch of the USO, he met Jack Paar, and the two remained friends for years. In 1954–55, Melis was the pianist when '' The Morning Show'' on CBS was hosted by Paar. Then Paar moved from mornings to late night, and from 1957 to 1962, Melis served as the musical director of ''The Tonight Show'' during Jack Paar's tenure as host. Efisio Melis (1890–1970) was a Sardinian folk musician, and noted to have been one of the greatest launeddas players in the world. He was born in Villaputzu near the southeastern tip of the island of Sardinia, the same town of fellow noted launeddas player Antonio Lara. Melis was a child prodigy, performing in public at the age of eleven. His career fell into decline in the 1920s, but revived in the mid-1930s when he made a number of recordings on the ''launeddas'' that have since been reissued and serve as important documentation of his skill. He was praised by the Danish musicologist, Andreas Fridolin Weis Bentzon, as having a talent comparable to that of Bach and Mozart (cited in Leydi, 1990). Dorothea Melis (born Dorothea Voigt: 22 February 1938 – 29 June 2015) was a German fashion journalist. Life Early years Dorothea Voigt was born in Berlin. Her father worked as an architect. She grew up with her family in Berlin's Weissensee quarter, ending up after the war in the Soviet occupation zone, which would be relaunched in October 1949 as the Soviet sponsored German Democratic Republic (East Germany). She studied fashion and design at the Berlin-Weißensee Visual and Applied Arts academy. At the end of the course students were required to submit a dissertation. Voigt completed her degree in 1960 with a dissertation that was savagely critical of East Germany's popular fashion magazine, "Sibylle" which had been founded in 1956, a few years earlier: she was repelled by the publication's staid fashions, its pathetic poses and its housewifely approach. Carmen Melis
Carmen Melis (15 August 1885 – 19 December 1967) was an Italian operatic soprano who had a major international career during the first four decades of the 20th century. She was known, above all, as a verismo soprano, and was one of the most interesting singing actresses of the early 20th century. She made her debut in Novara in 1905 and her career rapidly developed in her native country over the next four years. From 1909 to 1916, she performed with important opera companies in the United States; after which she was busy performing at many of Europe's most important opera houses. From 1917 until her retirement from the stage in 1935, she was particularly active at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and at La Scala in Milan.
