Melgaço () is a municipality in the district of Viana do Castelo District, Viana do Castelo in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 9,213, in an area of 238.25 km2. It is the northernmost municipality in Portugal. The present Mayor is Manoel Batista, elected by the Socialist Party (Portugal), Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is Ascension Day. Melgaço is certified by the EarthCheck, EarthCheck Sustainable Destinations program. History Parada do Monte, Gave and the plateau of Castro Laboreiro were locations of many megalithic burial mounds and graves that suggest the presence of human settlement in the mountains of the region. Alongside is the hilltop castle, that stood firm during the Galician-Leonese battles. Over the streams they built bridges in solid masonry, while dozens of fishing villages sprung from the banks of the River Minho, in addition to the Romanesque convents, churches and chapels, some of which are quite Romanesque. Fountain Of São João (Melgaço)
The Fountain of São João () is a fountain located in the freguesia, civil parish of, municipality of Melgaço Municipality, Portugal, Melgaço, in the Norte Region, Portugal, northern Portugal. History The fountain dates to 1780, with the payment for the construction funded by Dr. João Pedro de Sá, the ''juiz de fora'' for the town of Melgaço, who lived in the locality of Assadura. He was supported with donations from the nobility of the town of Melgaço. In 1903, the fountain was transferred to the ''Praça da República'' in the municipality. At the beginning of the 20th century, the ''Praça da Repúblic'' was already punctuated with trees; the fountain was located in the area opposite the castle and old Conde de Ferreira Primary School. In May 1970, a ministerial dispatch approved the study into moving the fountain from eastern part of the ''Praça da República'' to the northeast corner of the square.
