Megalichthyids
Megalichthyidae is an extinct family (biology), family of tetrapodomorphs which lived from the Middle Devonian, Middle–Late Devonian to the Early Permian. They are known primarily from freshwater deposits, mostly in the Northern Hemisphere (Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and North America), but one genus (''Cladarosymblema'') is known from Australia, and the possible megalichthyid ''Mahalalepis'' is from Antarctica. Description Megalichthyids were fairly primitive tetrapodomorphs, retaining a largely fish-like appearance. Like some other primitive sarcopterygians, their bodies were covered in rhomboid Fish scale, scales that possessed a layer of cosmine (a porous, mineralised tissue). The scales however lacked the peg-and-socket articulations found in some other groups. The skulls of megalichthyids had a rather low and broad shape. Sarcopterygian
Sarcopterygii (; )—sometimes considered synonymous with Crossopterygii ()—is a clade (traditionally a class or subclass) of vertebrate animals which includes a group of bony fish commonly referred to as lobe-finned fish. These vertebrates are characterised by prominent muscular limb buds (lobes) within their fins, which are supported by articulated appendicular skeletons. This is in contrast to the other clade of bony fish, the Actinopterygii, which have only skin-covered bony spines supporting the fins. The tetrapods, a mostly terrestrial clade of vertebrates, are now recognized as having evolved from sarcopterygian ancestors and are most closely related to lungfishes. Their paired pectoral and pelvic fins evolved into limbs, and their foregut diverticulum eventually evolved into air-breathing lungs. Tusks are elongated, continuously growing front teeth that protrude well beyond the mouth of certain mammal species. Cosmine is a spongy, bony material that makes up the dentine-like layers in the scales of the lobe-finned fishes of the class Sarcopterygii.
