Medeu
The Medeu (, ''Medeu'') is an outdoor speed skating and bandy rink. It is located in a mountain valley ( Medeu Valley, or the valley of Malaya Almatinka River) on the south-eastern outskirts of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Medeu sits 1,691 metres above sea level. It consists of 10.5 thousand square meters of ice and utilizes a sophisticated freezing and watering system to ensure the quality of the ice. History The Medeu is a high-altitude sports complex near Almaty, located at an altitude of 1,691 meters above sea level. It is considered to be the world's largest high-mountain skating rink. The skating rink was named after the Maloalmatinsky volost Medeu Pusurmanov. He built three wooden huts for the wintering of his family there, and began the development of the tract in the foothills of the Zailiysky Alatau. Medeu Tract
The Medeu gorge (; ) is a territory located in the valley of Malaya Almatinka River, in foothills of Trans-Ili Alatau ridge at an altitude of 1520–1750 meters, 14 km to the southeast of center of Almaty. The natural boundaries of gorge territory are: Kimasar mountain spur separating the basins of the and Butakovka rivers, to the east - Kabyrgatau separating the gorges of the Kimasar and Sarysai rivers, to the south-west - Kumbel peak. On territory of the gorge in 1966 a mudflow protection Medeu Dam was built, below which is located the Medeu high-mountain sports complex. The Medeu Mudflow Control Dam (, ''Medeý bógeti'') is a dam across the Medeu tract, Medeu Valley south-east of Almaty, Kazakhstan, designed to protect the city from devastating debris flows (or mudflows). Shymbulak
Shymbulak (, cyrl, ''Шымбұлақ''), also known as Chimbulak (, ) is a ski resort near Almaty, Kazakhstan. It is the largest ski resort in Central Asia. It is located in the upper part of the Medeu Valley in the Zailiisky Alatau mountain range, at an elevation of above sea level. The resort area is about south of Almaty city by Medeo road. It is popular for its mild climate, large number of sunny days and great amount of snow through the winter (from November till May). History Shymbulak (also known as "Chimbulak") was discovered by amateur skiers in the 1940s. Soon after, it became the first downhill route in the Soviet Union. The Bandy World Championship is a competition for the men's teams of bandy-playing nations. The tournament is administrated by the Federation of International Bandy. It is distinct from the Bandy World Cup, a club competition, and from the Women's Bandy World Championship. A Youth Bandy World Championship also exists separately from the senior competition and has competitions in both the male and female categories.
