McConnell, West Virginia
McConnell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Logan County, West Virginia, United States, on the Guyandotte River. As of the 2020 census, its population was 412 (down from 514 at the 2010 census). It was established in 1933. The community was named after one Mr. McConnell, a railroad promoter. Geography McConnell is in central Logan County, on the east side of the Guyandotte River, a north-flowing tributary of the Ohio River. The CDP is bordered to the north by Stollings. Hanging Rock Highway, former West Virginia Route 10, is the main road through the community, leading northwest (downriver) to Logan, the county seat, and southeast (upriver) to Man. WV-10, now a four-lane limited access highway, runs up the valley on the west side of the river with local access southeast and northwest of town. Guyandotte River
The Guyandotte River is a tributary of the Ohio River, approximately 166 mi (267 km) long, in southwestern West Virginia in the United States. It was named after the French term for the Wendat Native Americans. It drains an area of the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau south of the Ohio between the watersheds of the Kanawha River to the northeast and Twelvepole Creek and the Big Sandy River to the southwest. Via the Ohio River, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. Course The Guyandotte River is formed in southwestern Raleigh County by the confluence of three streams, Winding Gulf, Stonecoal Creek, and the Devils Fork. Man is a town in Logan County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 772 at the 2020 census. The town is located along the Guyandotte River at the mouth of Buffalo Creek, which was the site of the 1972 Buffalo Creek Flood following a dam collapse. The name of the town reportedly derives from the last syllable of the surname of Ulysses Hinchman, who was a member of the House of Delegates from Logan County between 1866 and 1869. West Virginia Route 10 is a north–south route from Cabell County, West Virginia, Cabell County to Mercer County, West Virginia, Mercer County in the western and southern regions of West Virginia. Mostly a two-lane, winding highway with no shoulders, Route 10 is considered to be one of substandard design when compared to modern standards. Nevertheless, it serves as a major arterial highway in the state, carrying a substantial amount of traffic volume. Tractor-trailers have a particularly difficult time negotiating many of the route's sharp, hairpin curves. Stollings is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in central Logan County, West Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 310 (slightly down from 316 at the 2010 census). Geography Stollings is located in central Logan County on the Guyandotte River at the junction of West Virginia Route 10 (WV 10) and the southern terminus of West Virginia Route 17 (WV 17), east-southeast of Logan, the county seat.
