McCanna, North Dakota
McCanna is an unincorporated community in western Grand Forks County, North Dakota, United States. It lies approximately 37 miles (60 km) northwest of the city of Grand Forks, the county seat of Grand Forks County. McCanna has a population of 22. McCanna's elevation is 1139 feet (347 m). History In 1881, brothers David and Simon McCanna started the McCanna Farming Company in Elm Grove Township, in Grand Forks County. David moved to Towner County just one year later in 1882, while Simon stayed and founded the town of McCanna in 1883. In 1885, Simon married Katherine O'Gorman. The couple had 8 children, with 5 sons surviving to adulthood. Simon died in 1906, passing control of the farm to his son Charles (born 1884). Under the direction of his brother Edwin McCanna, the McCanna family established the Bank of McCanna in 1911. In June 1930, the Bank of McCanna collapsed. Grand Forks County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 73,170, and was estimated to be 73,771 in 2024, making it the third-most populous county in North Dakota. The county seat and the largest city is Grand Forks. History Using territory annexed from Pembina County, the Dakota Territory legislature created Grand Forks County on January 4, 1873. Its governing structure was not established at that time, nor was the territory attached to another county for administrative and judicial purposes. The government was organized on March 2, 1875. The county's boundaries were altered in 1875, 1881, and 1883. It has retained its present boundary since 1883. Towner County, North Dakota
Towner County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population is 2,162. Its county seat is Cando. It is south of the Canada–US border with Manitoba. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on March 8, 1883, with areas partitioned from Cavalier and Rolette counties. It was named for Oscar M. Towner (1842–1897), a businessman and member of the 15th territorial legislature. The county organization was not completed at that time, and the county was attached to Pembina County for judicial and administrative purposes. That lasted until January 24, 1884, when the county organization was effected, and its attachment to Pembina was dissolved. However, on January 26, 1889, the county was attached to Ramsey County for judicial and administrative purposes. This arrangement only lasted a few months. Joseph Bell DeRemer (1871–1944), who lived and worked in Grand Forks, North Dakota, was one of the finest architects in North Dakota. Some of the important works produced by him or his firm, which included his son Samuel Teel DeRemer, include the Oxford House (Grand Forks, North Dakota), President's House at the University of North Dakota, the Masonic Temple (Grand Forks, North Dakota), Masonic Temple, and the Art Moderne United Lutheran Church (Grand Forks, North Dakota), United Lutheran Church and North Dakota State Capitol skyscraper. The North Dakota Museum of Art (NDMOA) is the official art museum of the American state of North Dakota. Located on the campus of the University of North Dakota, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the museum is a private not-for-profit institution.
