Mazz
Mazz was a Tejano band originally from Brownsville, Texas. Read online, registration required Accessed on September 29, 2014 The band was known for their idiosyncratic and innovative form of Tejano cumbia which made them distinguishable among their counterparts. Mazz became one of the most popular Tejano music bands during the genre's 1990s golden age. Mazz won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and in 2009, the most wins for a Tejano musician. They landed their first major recording contract with EMI Latin in the early 1990s, before switching to Freddie Records in 1999. Joe Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez formed Mazz in 1978 before disbanding and creating smaller bands throughout their careers. Gonzalez was known for blending a variety of genres into his basic Tejano sound, a formula he continued to use up until his final release, ''Porque Todavía te Quiero'' (2018). The Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album is an honor presented annually at the Latin Grammy Awards, a ceremony that recognizes excellence and creates a wider awareness of cultural diversity and contributions of Latin recording artists in the United States and internationally. The award goes to solo artists, duos, or groups for releasing vocal or instrumental albums containing at least 51% of new recordings in the tejano music genre. Jimmy González & El Grupo Mazz are the biggest winners in this category with five awards, including four years in a row from 2001 to 2004, and they are followed by Los Palominos, with two, who were also the first winners of this category in 2000 for the album ''Por Eso Te Amo''. The Tejano Music Award for Single of the Year was an honor presented annually at the Tejano Music Awards from 1981 to 1995. The category was retired, while eligible entries were nominated for the Tejano Music Award for Song of the Year and the genre-specific categories Tejano Crossover, Mexican Regional Song, and Tejano Country Song of the Year. Tejano music (), also known as Tex-Mex music, is a popular music style fusing Mexican influences. Its evolution began in northern Mexico (a variation of regional Mexican music known as ). The 4th Annual Latin Grammy Awards were held in Miami at the American Airlines Arena on Wednesday, September 3, 2003. It was the first time the telecast was held outside of Los Angeles. Freddie Records
Freddie Records is an American independent record label founded in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 1, 1969, by musician Freddie Martinez. Originally functioning as a recording studio and distributor for Martinez, the label expanded its roster to include other Tejano musicians to avoid financial failure. The label commenced producing albums for an array of artists, including Ramón Ayala, Agustin Ramirez, Oscar Martinez, and Joe Bravo. Ayala became the best-selling act of the label, sustaining the financial stability of Freddie Records throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The label sponsored a Little Joe concert in 1978 and recorded it for their ''Live for Schlitz'' album. It led to a ban on future events in the area, though the album remained a lucrative live recording for Freddie Records for two decades. Luis Silva (songwriter)
Luis Silva (November 5, 1943 – October 22, 2008) was a Tejano music songwriter, considered by music critics to have been one of the "most well-known and prolific songwriters in the history of Tejano music" and "one of the most influential and prolific songwriters and record label promoters in Tejano music history". Silva wrote two winning Tejano Music Awards for Song of the Year, won three consecutive times for Songwriter of the Year, and remains the most awarded songwriter for the Tejano Music Award for Single of the Year category. He is part of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and his songwriting career spanned three decades and included a roster from Ram Herrera, Mazz, La Mafia, David Marez, among others. The winners of the Second Annual Latin Grammy Awards were announced during a press conference on Tuesday, October 30, 2001, at the Conga Room in Los Angeles, California. The conference, which was broadcast live on the internet, was hosted by Jimmy Smits and Paul Rodriguez; the original award ceremony, scheduled for September 11, 2001, was canceled. Capitol Latin (formerly EMI Latin) is a brand of Universal Music Latin Entertainment, a division of Universal Music Group. Previously, it was a subsidiary of EMI. History In 1989, José Behar, the former head of CBS Discos, signed Selena to Capitol/EMI Latin, because he thought he had discovered the next Gloria Estéfan. In 1990, Capitol/EMI Latin acquired San Antonio, Texas–based Cara Records in order to capitalize on the popularity of Tejano.
