Mayfair West is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. The suburb is west of the Johannesburg CBD and is adjacent to Mayfair. It is located in Region F of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. History Mayfair West is located on plot No. 258 of Langlaagte farm, where Sir Joseph Robinson, 1st Baronet bought mineral rights in 1886. Government surveyor M.C. Vos surveyed it and the first parcel was sold on 24 May 1896. Robinson built his mining headquarters there, including the first office building on what was previously open veld. Nearby Langerman Street is named after his general manager, who steered the company away from participating in the ill-fated Johannesburg Reform Committee. South African Standard Time
South African Standard Time (SAST) is the time zone used by all of South Africa as well as Eswatini and Lesotho. The zone is two hours ahead of UTC ( UTC+02:00) and is the same as Central Africa Time. Daylight saving time is not observed in either time zone. Solar noon in this time zone occurs at 30° E in SAST, effectively making Pietermaritzburg at the correct solar noon point, with Johannesburg and Pretoria slightly west at 28° E and Durban slightly east at 31° E. Thus, most of South Africa's population experience true solar noon at approximately 12:00 daily. The western Northern Cape and Western Cape differ, however. Mayfair
Mayfair is an area of Westminster, London, England, in the City of Westminster. It is in Central London and part of the West End. It is between Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly and Park Lane and one of the most expensive districts in the world. The area was originally part of the manor of Eia and remained largely rural until the early 18th century. It became well known for the annual May Fair that took place from 1686 to 1764 in what is now Shepherd Market. Johannesburg Reform Committee
The Reform Committee was an organisation of prominent Johannesburg citizens that existed late 1895 and early 1896. The Transvaal gold rush had brought in a considerable foreign population, which was chiefly British although there were substantial minorities from other nations. The Boers referred to them as '' Uitlanders'' (foreigners). The immigrants, who were by far the wealthiest part of the community, formed a Reform Committee headed by Lionel Phillips, Charles Leonard, Colonel Frank Rhodes (brother of Cecil), John Hays Hammond, Chief mining engineer from California Victor Clement, and a few others. They demanded a stable constitution, a fair franchise law, an independent judiciary and a better educational system. Sir Joseph Robinson, 1st Baronet
Joseph Benjamin Robinson, (3 August 1840 – 30 October 1929) was a South African gold and diamond mining magnate and Randlord. Mayor of Kimberley, Northern Cape in 1880, which he represented in the Cape parliament for four years, chairman of the Robinson South African Banking Corporation Co , Ltd and of numeral gold mines in the Transvaal Colony, he was convicted in 1921 of fraud and fined half a million pounds. He is best remembered as having paid political fixer Maundy Gregory £30,000, towards Prime Minister Lloyd George’s political fund, in exchange for a peerage. After the King personally complained and under public pressure, the government forced Robinson to reject the appointment. History Prior to the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886, the suburb lay on land on one of the original farms that make up Johannesburg, called ''Langlaagte''. The land was purchased by J.B. Robinson. It was established as a suburb in 1896 and is named after Mayfair in London.
