Christa Mayer is a German operatic mezzo-soprano. She is particularly known for her portrayal of Erda in Richard Wagner's ''Ring Cycle''; a role which she has performed several times at the Bayreuth Festival and recorded on the BBC Legends Record Label. Life and career Mayer was born in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Bavaria. After graduating from the Bavarian Academy of Singing, she pursued further studies at the Munich Academy of Music where she was a pupil of tenor Thomas Moser. She won several notable singing competitions, including prizes in the ARD International Music Competition in Munich (third prize) and the Robert Schumann International Competition for Pianists and Singers (second prize). Daniel Mayer (1856 – 1928) was a German-born English musical entrepreneur. He was three times mayor of Bexhill-on-Sea. History Mayer was born in Westphalia, to Gottschalk Mayer and Henrietta Heyman Mayer. They brought him to England at the age of two but sent him back to Germany to study in Coblenz, Cologne and Bonn. He returned to England in 1874. Mayer married Alice Allez, a British subject, in 1886, and was himself naturalized in 1892, at which time the family was living at 6 Maresfield Gardens, Belsize Park, London. They moved to Bexhill around 1895, from around 1905 living at Collington Manor. He was elected councillor for the town, and mayor in 1905 and again from 1911 to 1914, when he stood down, at least in part due to his German heritage, which was suspect despite their two sons enlisting with the British Army (Emil died from pneumonia in 1918 and possibly never left Britain). Constant Mayer (October 3, 1829 – May 12, 1911) was a French painter who emigrated to the United States. Mayer was born in Besançon, France to a Jewish family. He studied in Paris in the École des Beaux-Arts and under Léon Cogniet, and followed his profession in that city until 1854, when he moved to New York City. Mayer worked as a colorist at the photography studio of Jeremiah Gurney and CD Fredericks, at 340 Broadway, in Manhattan. With his own studio, at 1155 Broadway, he became known for his genre or historical paintings based on literature, and particularly for his portraits. He also created many sketches and drawings. Christian Gustav Adolph Mayer (15 February 1839 – 11 April 1908) was a German mathematician. Mayer was born on February 15, 1839, in Leipzig, Germany. His father was a businessman from Leipzig. He studied at the University of Leipzig, University of Göttingen, University of Heidelberg and University of Königsberg. He completed his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg in 1861. Christian Mayer (January 24, 1827 - August 6, 1910) was an American carpenter and businessman from Watertown, Wisconsin who manufactured doors and sash windows. He served as an alderman in, and mayor of, that city, and as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Background Mayer was born on January 24, 1827, in Bretten, then part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. He received a common school education. He emigrated to the United States in 1852. He spent six months in Brooklyn as a carpenter and joiner, then settled for a while in Buffalo, New York, working at the Buffalo City Planing-Mills.
