Matthias Askew
Matthias Askew (born July 1, 1982) is an American former professional football defensive tackle. He was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL draft. He played college football at Michigan State. Askew was also a member of the Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions and Toronto Argonauts. College career Askew started 19 of 35 games during his career at Michigan State University, recording 144 tackles with seven sacks, 18.5 stops for losses, 24 quarterback pressures, an interception and eight pass deflections. Professional career Cincinnati Bengals Askew was selected in the 2004 NFL draft by Cincinnati after leaving college early to declare for the NFL draft. He was projected by many to be a possible first round pick the following year had he stayed in school. Defensive Tackle
A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that typically lines up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the Guard (American football), offensive guards; however, he may also line up opposite one of the offensive Tackle (gridiron football position), tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent's backfield. If a defensive tackle reads a pass play, his primary responsibility is to pursue the quarterback, or simply knock the pass down at the line if it is within arm's reach. In gridiron football, the practice squad, also called the taxi squad or practice roster, is a group of players signed by a team but not part of their main roster. They serve as extra players during the team's practices, often as part of the scout team by emulating an upcoming opponent's play style. Because the players on the practice squad are familiar with the team's plays and formations, the practice squad serves as a way to develop inexperienced players for promotion to the main roster.
