Matsutarō Kawaguchi
was a Japanese writer of short stories, novels, dramas and screenplays. He repeatedly collaborated on films of director Kenji Mizoguchi, and his books were adapted by directors such as Mikio Naruse and Kōzaburō Yoshimura. Biography Kawaguchi was born in the Asakusa district of Tokyo. He worked in a variety of jobs and studied under Mantarō Kubota and Kaoru Osanai. In 1935, he received the first Naoki Prize for his short stories ''Tsuruhachi Tsurujirō'' and ''Fūryū fukagawa uta'' and the novella ''Meiji ichidai onna''. The novel ''Aizen katsura'', a melodramatic love story between a nurse and a doctor, was serialised between 1937 and 1938 and made into highly popular film starring Kinuyo Tanaka and Ken Uehara. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Kawaguchi became a member of the Pen Butai, Pen butai ("Pen brigade"), a government-sponsored group of writers who had access to off-limits war areas and were in return expected to write favourably of Japan's war efforts in China. Princess Yang Kwei Fei
is a 1955 historical film directed by Kenji Mizoguchi. It was a co-production between Japan's Daiei Film and Hong Kong's Shaw & Sons (later Shaw Brothers). It is one of Mizoguchi's two colour films, the other being '' Tales of the Taira Clan'', made the same year. Tsuruhachi And Tsurujiro
is a 1938 Japanese drama film by Mikio Naruse. The film about a duo of traditional music performers is based on a short story (and later shinpa play) by Matsutarō Kawaguchi. Plot Tsuruhachi and Tsurujirō, who've known each other since their childhood days, are a successful musical performing duo, with Tsurijirō acting as the tayū (singer), and Tsuruhachi accompanying him on the shamisen. Although both had been taught their art by Tsuruhachi's now deceased mother, he constantly criticises her way of playing, which leads to repeated conflicts that have to be resolved by their manager Shohei and venue owner Takeno. After Tsuruhachi tells Tsurujirō that she considers marrying wealthy Mr. Matsuzaki, Tsurujirō confesses his love for her, and Tsuruhachi agrees to marry him instead. Hiroshi Kawaguchi (, 22 August 1936 – 17 November 1987) was a Japanese film actor. He appeared in more than 50 films between 1956 and 1986. He was born in Tokyo, Japan.
