Masausi, American Samoa
The village of Masausi is a locality in the Eastern District of American Samoa. Masausi is situated near the villages of Sa'ilele and Utuloa. The village is reached from a road in Faga’itua. An archeoligcal site known as AS-23-7 is located at Masausi. Along the coast, between the Vaipito and Panota Streams, Kirch and Hunt collected two artifacts. One was a butt of a roughly flaked, quadrangular adze. The Community-Based Fisheries Program (CFMP) was established in 2000 to empower villages in American Samoa to develop and implement their own marine protection policies. This initiative encourages local stewardship of marine resources, with several villages, including Masausi (home to the Masausi Village Marine Protected Area), voluntarily participating in the program. Eastern District, American Samoa
The Eastern District is one of the primary districts of American Samoa. It consists of the eastern portion of Tutuila, American Samoa's largest island, plus the island of Aunu'u. The district has a land area of and a 2010 census population of 23,030. It contains 34 villages plus a portion of Nuʻuuli village. Among these are Pago Pago, Fagatogo, and Utulei. In addition to the eastern half of Tutuila Island and the island of Aunu'u, the Eastern District encompasses several smaller islands, including Nuusetoga Island (Bartlett Island), Pola Island, Avagatatau Rock, Fatutoaga Rock, Tauga Rock, Manofa Rock, and Nuuosina Rock. Saʻilele, American Samoa
Sailele is a village on the north shore in the Eastern District of Tutuila Island in American Samoa. It is reached from a cross-island road which leads north from the village of Fagaitua. On a track east of the village is a burial ground where some alii (high chiefs) were buried. Sailele was home to the only pre-Christian temple ever documented on Tutuila Island: Sailele Mālumālu. The temple consisted of a small fale about ten feet in length, covered by a low roof. The structure was set in a thick and sacred grove of coconut trees. Rocks discovered inside the temple were referred to as The Immovable Rock, The Enduring Power and The Rock Fixed in the Kingdom. In 2002, Sailele's highest chief, Matua, Togiola Talalelei A. Fagaʻitua, American Samoa
Fagaitua is a village in the east of Tutuila Island, American Samoa. It is located on the central coast of Fagaitua Bay. It is in Sua County, a county also known as ("the house of the five in the east"). Fagaitua is located at a shallow bay on the south coast of the island, in-between Lauli'i and Alofau. It is home to Luafagā, Le'iato's house of chiefs, and the big malae Malotumau. Coral reefs at Fagaitua suffered significant damage during the 2009 tsunami. Fagaitua is home to the smallest and most rural high school in American Samoa. Fagaitua High School (FHS), whose student body is around 500 as of 2018, practices football at the old rugby field by Pago Pago Bay. It has never had its own field but has utilized the uneven turf at Onesosopo Park, which is replete with volcanic stubble, water, toads, and sand traps. Vaipito Valley
Vaipito Valley is a valley in Pago Pago, American Samoa. Situated inland, the valley lies at the head of Pago Pago Harbor and follows the course of the Vaipito Stream, the main drainage system for the Pago Pago watershed. The valley rises to an elevation of approximately 600 feet, forming a natural low point in the surrounding mountain range, and serves as a primary residential area in Pago Pago village. Vaipito Valley serves as the meeting point for three streams — the Vaipito Stream, Leau Stream, and Vaima Stream — which all flow into Pago Pago Harbor. The valley is framed by two mountains: Fatifati Mountain to the north, standing at 370 meters, and Palapalaloa Mountain to the south, reaching an elevation of 470 meters.
