María Teresa Linares Savio
María Teresa Linares Savio (14 August 1920 – 26 January 2021) was a Cuban musicologist, ethnographer, and researcher of Cuban music. She had a degree from the University of Havana in Literature and Hispanic Language Majoring Cuban Studies, a PhD in Art Sciences, and a ''Doctor Honoris Causa of the Superior Arts Institute of Cuba'' (1996). Linares taught in Havana's prestigious music conservatories Amadeo Roldán and Alejandro García Caturla, as well as lecturing at the University of Havana. Since a young age she was involved in music interpretation and investigation. Biography Linares was born in Havana, Cuba in August 1920. She was, along with her husband, ethno-musicologist Argeliers León, a founder of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, where she carried out field researches and gave courses to students. The University of Havana (UH; ) is a public university located in the Vedado district of Havana, the capital of Cuba. Founded on 5 January 1728, the university is the oldest in Cuba, and one of the first to be founded in the Americas. Argeliers León
Argeliers León Pérez (7 May 1918 – 23 February 1991) was a Cuban composer and musicologist. Academic Background He studied music at the Municipal Conservatory of Havana, Pedagogy at the University of Havana and completed specialized studies during summer courses at the University of Havana and the Universidad de Concepción in Chile. He studied composition with Joseph Ardévol in Cuba and in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, ethnology and folklore with Don Fernando Ortiz and María Muñoz de Quevedo. Composer Argeliers León was a member of "Grupo de Renovación Musical", which served as a platform for a group of young composers to develop a proactive movement with the purpose of improving and literally renovating the quality of the Cuban musical environment. EGREM (Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales, Spanish for ''Enterprise of Recordings and Musical Editions'') is the national record label of Cuba. It is headquartered in Centro Habana, where its main record studios (''Estudios Areito'' 101 & 102) operate. National Union Of Writers And Artists Of Cuba
The National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba, UNEAC) is a social, cultural and professional organization of writers, musicians, actors, painters, sculptors, and artist of different genres. It was founded on August 22, 1961, by the Cuban poet, Nicolas Guillen. Initially their objective was uniting the intellectuals within the young Cuban Revolution to maintain a genuine Cuban culture. The group issued ''La Gaceta de Cuba'' beginning in 1962. Cuban violinist and professor Evelio Tieles was President of the Music Section from 1977 to 1984. Manuel Vázquez Portal was expelled from UNEAC because of his dissident views. The music of Cuba, including its instruments, performance, and dance, comprises a large set of unique traditions influenced mostly by west African and European (especially Spanish) music. Due to the syncretic nature of most of its genres, Cuban music is often considered one of the richest and most influential regional music in the world. For instance, the son cubano merges an adapted Spanish guitar (tres), melody, harmony, and lyrical traditions with Afro-Cuban percussion and rhythms. Almost nothing remains of the original native traditions, since the native population was exterminated in the 16th century. Since the 19th century, Cuban music has been hugely popular and influential throughout the world.
