The Martyrs of Roermond ( nl, Martelaren van Roermond) were a group of 13 Dutch Catholic clerics, secular and religious, who were murdered on 23 July 1572 in the town of Roermond by militant Dutch Calvinists during the 16th-century religious wars—specifically, the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, which developed into the Eighty Years' War. Events On April 1, 1572 a group of Dutch rebels led by William van der Marck, Lord of Lumey, and by two of his captains, Willem Bloys van Treslong and Lenaert Jansz de Graeff managed to take the harbor city of Brielle - a turning point in the Dutch war against the Spanish Empire. Vincenzo Carducci
Vincenzio Carduccio (in Spanish, sometimes ''Vicencio'' or Vicente Carducho; 1576 or 1578–1638) was an Italian painter who spent his career in Spain. Biography He was born in Florence, and was trained as a painter by his brother Bartolomeo Carduccio, whom he followed to Madrid as a boy. He initially painted some works at Valladolid and helped his brother paint the Escorial for Philip II of Spain. He returned to the court of Philip III in Madrid in 1606 and helped decorate the recently rebuilt Palacio del Pardo. While at work his brother died, and Vicente took his place. He painted there a history of Achilles. Roermond Charterhouse
Roermond Charterhouse, otherwise Bethlehem Charterhouse ( nl, Kartuizerklooster Bethlehem, ), was a Carthusian monastery or charterhouse in Roermond in the province of Limburg in the south Netherlands. It was founded in 1376 by Werner van Swalmen, a canon at Maastricht, after he had returned from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and settled by 12 monks from Cologne Charterhouse. One of the first priors was the prominent scholar Henry of Kalkar. The important and prolific 15th-century theologian Denis the Carthusian (1402–1471) was a monk here. In the 15th century the charterhouse was able to undertake the settlement of two new monasteries, Vught Charterhouse (1466) and Vogelsang Charterhouse (1478). The monastery was destroyed by fire in 1554 and pillaged by the army of William the Silent, Prince of Orange, in 1572, when half the monks were killed, subsequently known as the Martyrs of Roermond. William Damasus Lindanus or Van der Lindt (1525 – 2 November 1588) was a 16th-century Bishop of Roermond and Bishop of Ghent. Biography William Damasus Lindanus was born at Dordrecht in 1525, the son of Damasus van der Lint. He studied philosophy and theology at the Old University of Leuven, University of Leuven, and having during this time applied himself also to Ancient Greek, Greek and Hebrew language, Hebrew, went to Paris to perfect himself in these languages. In 1552 he won the licenciate at Leuven, and the same year was ordained to the priesthood. Two years later, he was appointed professor of Sacred Scripture at the University of Dillingen. In 1556, he took the Doctorate, doctor's degree at Leuven, and was appointed vicar-general to the Archdiocese of Utrecht (695–1580), Bishop of Utrecht and dean of the chapter at the court chapel of the Binnenhof in The Hague.
