Martinique National Football Team
The Martinique national football team () represents the French overseas department and overseas region, region of Martinique in international association football, football. The team is controlled by the Ligue de Football de la Martinique (), a local branch of the French Football Federation, FFF. The association is not a member of the world governing body FIFA. On 7 August 2010, the team adopted the nickname ''Les Matinino'', which pays tribute to the History of Martinique, history of the island. History Of Martinique
This is a page on the history of the island of Martinique. 100–1450 The island was originally inhabited by Arawaks, Arawak and Island Caribs, Carib peoples. Circa 130 AD, the first Arawaks are believed to have arrived from South America. In 295 A.D, an eruption of Mount Pelée resulted in the decimation of the island's population. Around 400 A.D, the Arawaks returned and repopulated the island. Around 600 A.D, the Caribs arrived. They exterminated the Arawaks and proceeded to settle on the island over the next few centuries. 1450–1600 Christopher Columbus charted the island in 1493, making the region known to European interests, but it was not until June 15, 1502, on his fourth voyage, that he actually landed, leaving several pigs and goats on the island. The overseas departments and regions of France (, ; DROM) are the five departments and regions of the French Republic which are located outside European France (also known as " metropolitan France"). These overseas entities have exactly the same status as European France's departments and regions. The 1996 Caribbean Cup (also known as the Shell/ Umbro Caribbean Cup for sponsorship reasons), was the 8th edition of the Caribbean Cup, the biennial football championship of the Caribbean region (CFU).
