Marthe (novel)
''Marthe, histoire d'une fille'' (English: ''Marthe, the Story of a Girl'' — where "girl" implies "prostitute" ) was the first novel by the French writer Joris-Karl Huysmans, published in 1876. The book is autobiographical in inspiration and tells the story of the love affair between a young journalist called Léo and the heroine of the title, a would-be actress who had worked in a factory for artificial pearls as well as in a licensed brothel.Chapter 2 of Baldick (2006) discusses Huysmans' first love affair, with a soubrette from Bobino upon whom Marthe is based. The love affair breaks up and Marthe goes to live with the alcoholic actor-manager Ginginet. After his death, she is reduced to living on the streets. Huysmans was worried about the response to the book's controversial subject matter, since the author Jean Richepin had recently been imprisoned for a month and fined for writing a book on the theme of prostitution. Georges Ohnet (3 April 1848, in Paris – 5 May 1918) was a French novelist. Life and career Ohnet was educated at the Collège Sainte-Barbe and the Lycée Henri-IV, Lycée Napoléon. After the Franco-Prussian War he became editor of the magazines ''Pays'' and ''Constitutionnel'' in succession. In collaboration with the engineer and dramatist Louis Denayrouze (b. 1848) he produced the play ''Regina Sarpi'', and during 1877 ''Marthe (play), Marthe''. Ohnet was an admirer of George Sand and was opposed to realistic modern novels. He began a series of novels, ''Les Batailles de la vie'', of a character simple and idealistic, which, although scorned by the critics as unreal and commonplace, were very popular. Gérard Jugnot
Gérard Jugnot (; born 4 May 1951) is a French actor, film director, screenwriter and film producer. Jugnot was one of the founders of the comedy ''troupe'' Le Splendid in the 1970s, along with, among others, his high-school friends Christian Clavier, Thierry Lhermitte, and Michel Blanc. Then Josiane Balasko and Marie-Anne Chazel joined them. The group adapted a number of its stage hits for the cinema and was extremely successful in films such as ''Les Bronzés'' (1978), ''Les Bronzés font du ski'' (1979) and ''Le Père Noël est une ordure'' (1982). Jugnot gained international fame for his lead role in ''Les choristes, Les Choristes'' in which he played Clément Mathieu. The last movie he directed was (2017).
