Marta Pérez (singer)
Marta Pérez (2 August 1924 in Havana, Cuba - 19 August 2009 in Miami, Florida) was a Cuban-American mezzo-soprano and the first Cuban woman to sing in Milan's famed La Scala opera house in 1955. Miss Pérez' artistic talents were recognized early in life and as a little girl she studied singing with Marila Granowska. By the age of 13, she was performing as a soloist with the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 1940s she began a series of tours with Ernesto Lecuona. Perez was the first to record Gonzalo Roig's zarzuela, " Cecilia Valdés". The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on a Spanish drama, ' (1835), by Ángel de Saavedra, 3rd Duke of Rivas, with a scene adapted from Friedrich Schiller's '' Wallensteins Lager'' (''Wallenstein's Camp''). Exile is primarily penal expulsion from one's native country, and secondarily expatriation or prolonged absence from one's homeland under either the compulsion of circumstance or the rigors of some high purpose. Usually persons and peoples suffer exile, but sometimes social entities like institutions (e.g. the papacy or a government) are forced from their homeland. Giuseppe Di Stefano
Giuseppe Di Stefano (24 July 19213 March 2008) was an Italian operatic tenor who sang professionally from the mid-1940s until the early 1990s. Called Pippo by both fans and friends, he was known as the "Golden voice" or "The most beautiful voice", as the true successor of Beniamino Gigli. Luciano Pavarotti said he modeled himself after Di Stefano. In an interview Pavarotti said "Di Stefano is my idol. ''There'' is a solar voice...It was the most incredible, open voice you could hear. The musicality of Di Stefano is as natural and beautiful as the voice is phenomenal". Di Stefano was also the tenor who most inspired José Carreras. He died on 3 March 2008 as a result of injuries from an attack by unknown assailants. ''Cecilia Valdés'' is both a novel by the Cuban writer Cirilo Villaverde (1812–1894), and a zarzuela based on the novel. It is a work of importance for its quality, and its revelation of the interaction of classes and races in Havana, Cuba. Novel The first version of the novel ''Cecilia Valdés o la Loma del Angel'' was published in Havana in 1839. After several revisions, the definitive and extended version was published in New York City in 1882. It has never been out of print in Spanish and has been translated into several English editions (as ''Cecilia Valdes" or "Angel Hill'').
